This was over the weekend. My wife and I hiked a section of the Buffalo River Trail that is incomplete and not open yet. We hiked a few miles upstream on the Buffalo from the road to South Maumee and ran out of trail eventually as it just turned into a trail of flagging for the construction crews to follow. We turned around and spent the rest of the day & night on Cane Island.

The second picture is of a typical trail sign located at trailheads and major intersections. It was taken at the HWY14 Dillards Ferry area and is not the section that we hiked. The third and fourth were taken at an old homestead right off the gravel road that leads to Maumee South Campground, which is closed due to budget problems. It is open for day use. The well was really deep, couldn't see the bottom. I don't know who messed up the top of it, looks like someone hooked a chain up to it.

I never leave home without the 2 National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps that cover the Buffalo and have nearly all of the trails on them. They have a West map and a East map. The new trail I hiked is part of a 28 mile section that is only partially complete; it is not on the map. The rest of the Buffalo River Trail is just fantastic and is on the maps.

Looks like an awesome place. May have to check that one out myself. Thanks for sharing.

I'll put up a couple more pictures so you can get an idea of what this area looks like in the summertime. Just so ya know, summer in Missouri and Arkansas resembles subtropical weather. High humidity, insects, ticks, overgrown trails, snakes and lots of sweat. I tell it like it is. These pictures are from early summer last year along a different section of the Buffalo River Trail not too far away from last weekend's hike. For the most part all of my hiking is from October-April.

It looked pretty floatable to me, we did see a few canoes and kayaks. I would give Lost Valley Canoe in Ponca a call first before driving any distance. If you are camping, check on the campgrounds because some of them are closed. The remaining ones that are open might fill up.
