Hey gents, talkin to Karl(Cray) on the irc and he tells me a boot a kit he has for his drill press whichlets him buff using a felt wheel.
so, im on a mission, i need one of these, anyone know what theyre called?

Seems pretty risky to me, little or no support for the arms and wrists. Working on a bench or pedistal buffer where you can buff at waist level gives the arms and wrists more support against the body.

Take care.

well can i make a buffer using a

1/3 hp motor with

1725 rpm/

and do you know any cdn places that have parts for this kinda deal?

House of tools should have the arbor you need Im not sure what size a 1/3 horse usually has so you will need to figure that out

How do you get on to Irc I have tryed Repeated times and its never worked for me

Aaron,

I had a buffer attachment for a drill that had a 1/2" shaft for the buff (carried at all the hardware stores). I tried it in the drill press. You can control the speed, but I worried about what it did to the bearings (not built for lateral pressure) and safety.

If you want to attach to a 1750 motor (actually that's what I switched to) all the knife shops carry arbors. BTW 8" buff wheels are the way to go. My I run into the motor case with 6" buffs.

They just slip over the shaft and way you go.

PS Sorry but I don't know what a "cdn" place is.

Whoops shoulda added this www.houseoftools.com and I have buffed on a drill press but not with a knife only with small engine shoud's a knife could do some serious damage at that speed

bryce can you use irc on other chats? there are some things you need to do in settings or something
dcc options i believe its called

then on server

irc.newnet.net

i use

irc.eskimo.com

the channel is #bladeforums.com

if you need any help lots of ppl can help, or email me.

Princess Auto has threaded shaft attachments for small motors that will allow you to put buffs on a 1/3 HP motor. I admit that 1/3 is not very strong but it will work if you take it easy.

I used to polish hardened steel on my drill press using a small 1" homemade 1/8" shaft and 1" hard feldt pad and diamond paste. Worked pretty good, and I was sure to place the blade in a drill press vice. Yep, crude, dangerous, and hard on the drill press bearings. I didn't wait long to build buffers with yardsale motors! The only upside to the drill press deal was it was better than the dang Dremel!
