Can anyone reccommend a place to get a set of plans, and maybe a material list, for building a buffer? I'd like to make one with a separate spindle and motor, using a set of pillow blocks. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply, Phillip. This was actually the grinder that I had in mind when I posted the question! (did a search for the thread and couldn't find it...) I actually have a 3/4hp motor that was given to me a few years ago - haven't used it yet:D Your description lists a 1" shaft. Did you mill the ends (or have them milled) to the right diameter for the buffs? Is there a company that sells spindle shafts and pulleys like the ones that you used?

Howdy bennet,
I bought cold rolled 1" round from Metals Supermarket (I recommend you get turned ground and polished shafting instead of the CR. It's more expensive, but is a lot more precise), and turned the ends down on my dads 10" South Bend metal lathe. If you don't have access to a lathe, you should be able to get the job done at a machine shop for a reasonable amount.
At one time I found a place on the Web that sold premade shafts. I have no idea who the are now. They wanted a lot of money for them though.
Can't remember if I said this on the buffer thread, so I'll say it now; I turned one end down to accept tapered spindles, and threaded the other end for grinding wheels.
Hope this helps and have fun. :D
