Buffing Compound

Years ago a friend of mine had some red buffing compound that really was good on steel. We used to buff down a gun barrel before blueing and it was like a mirror. The compound would load on the wheel and get crusty. I haven't seen anywhere anything like this is available. I have bought some different compounds but none of them compare. Anyone have an idea of what I'm talking about?

Anything that gets crusty on the wheel will not be a very fine polish.
Jantz makes a "brush-on" compound that is brown. It comes in varying grits to 800.
You put it on the wheel and let it dry. I gave up using it years ago, and now use their "Greaseless" compounds.
