Is it possible? Just thinking that since I have a belt grinder but no buffer if there is a belt that would work for buffing it could be a way to save some money.

I have never seen such a belt but it seems like something that might be a good idea.

I've read in books that you can, by using worn belts at slow speeds. I tried it a time or two and got a decent shine but nothing good enough for a finish. You can buy buffer attachments for belt grinders. I think Rob Frink offers one, not sure. If he doesn't you can get them from the other suppliers like Texas and K&G.
The key is running slow and using the right compound.
Take care!

There is such a thing as a 2x72 felt buffing belt out there that you can load compound onto. I have one, it was ok but not like a wheel, as it won't work it's way down into nooks and crannies very well.

I would check the knife suppliers....

Thanks for the quick responses. I guess getting a used grinder won't be TOO expensive and the wheels are reasonable. It's always better to spend a little more on tools if they will deliver noticeably better results.

You can also just buy buffing wheels and two flanges, and run them where your contact wheel goes, if you have that type of grinder.

You can stack a few together to make up the space if you can't find the proper flanges.

All you have to do is specify the proper arbor size for the buffing wheel when ordering.

With belts, cork belts work well too. You have to break them in for at least ten minutes by pushing a piece of steel into it as it's running, like you're profiling a blade. There's a recent thread on the subject in this forum.

I've buffed with the following:

Leather belt
Felt belt
Scotchbrite belt (fine grit, loaded with compound)
Old micron belt with compound
Cork belt

Each imparts a different finish...I'm sure there are others..

What kind of grinder do you have. Tru-Grit out in Cali carries buffing lathe spendels to fit the Burr-King, adn KMG. Works just fine. Simply threads on to the shaft like the nut that holds the contact wheel on. M. Lovett

Cork belts will put a good shine on.Followed by a felt belt charged with polish.
