Hi folks,

I'm working on the finishing touches on a knife and am having problems with buffing.
I'm noticing that when I buff the nickle silver guard that the curly maple (stablized) handle, near the guard it getting a blackish hue to it.

I'm using white buffing compond on a new cloth wheel. Should I be using a different compound? Should I also tape the handle and buff the guard and reverse the process and buff the handle? I need some basic run down on what compunds are good for what. The compounds I have I bought used and most of the labels are gone.

Thanks a lot for the help!

You need to mask of the wood when you buff the nickel. As you're seeing , it transfers to the maple badly. The white compound is fine for the wood.

Like Mark said. Use two different buffs, same compound.

for the advice. I'll go back and redo the buffing, as you suggest. I hope I can
get the black out of the handle material with the buff. If not I guess I'll need to
go back to some hand sanding before buffing.

Thanks again,
Dana

Is the maple stabilized? If so, try wet-sanding it in a wash basin with warm soapy water.

Clean out the wood with a light sanding then buff in a protective wax coating of carnuba wax with a new clean wheel. The carnuba wax will fill the pores of the wood and reduce cleanup time.

Then rebuff the nickle silver trying not to touch the wood but if you do the wax will shed the dirt.

The wood is stablized, so I'll give the washing trick a try, as well as the
light sanding and the carnuba wax.

As always, I appreciate the great help found on this fantastic forum!

Kind regards,

Washing and light solvent will remove the black - maybe.
Polish the handle and mask off with tape.Buff the guard.remove tape, clean off, hand buff a bit.

I always had the handle darkening problem till I quit using white rouge. Once I started using pink no scratch on my handles and non steel furniture and green chrome on the steel furniture, no more handle darkening. I messed up some real fine desert iron wood with white rouge back in the day. Sure am glad a forumite put me onto pink no scratch!
