Lots of knife makers buff their blades by putting the buffing compound on an extremely worn out 600 or finer grit belt.
I was wondering if anyone has ever tried this with a worn out fine scotchbrite belt?
I use fine scotchbrites for my satin finishes and when they get worn out, they actually put a little bit of shine on the blade so I'm thinking they would be great with compound on em. As porous as they are they would hold the compound really well.
I'm gonna give this a try and will let you folks know how it works.

I use a scotch brite neutral loaded with Browness's 555 grey. Using worn grit belts did not work as well as they left some of the origonal grit scratches. Good luck.

Scotchbrite make a pure felt belt designated as "Type T LS". It is a white polyester felt with no grit at all. Just add buffing compound and buff. It leaves a little bit of buffing line unlike buffing wheels. Your 3M dealer can special order it for you.

hey mike, definitely, let us know. i cant afford a new buffer yet,and have been pondering about how to go about doing so.

and george, thanks for the tip,ill keep that in mind.

George, that sounds like it will work. Can you tell us where we can order these belts from.

Thanks, Dave

I musta done something wrong. I took an old scotch brite and ran a file over it for a few minutes to really wear it down. Loaded it up with white rouge and went to work on a blade of L6. Didn't polish it at all.
