Anyone tried these? I work in the NWT where the bugs are brutal and DEET is barely good enough, and gets all over everything and can ruin things, so I am always looking for effective alternatives. These do seem really expensive though.

Nope, never heard of them before. I did read the MSDS and it looks like it won't hurt you, but if DEET won't work I'm sceptical of this. I've never seen anything that wasn't bad for you that worked on skeeters and black flys. That doesn't mean they WON'T work, I'm just suspicious.

I don't know about the band, but the spray is the bomb. It was developed at U of Fl. I've used it in both the FLorida Everglades for mosquitos and in Tenn. woods for ticks. It works as well as the 100% deet and you will still be able to father children after prolonged usage. Contact the company and they usually send out free samples in the form of disposable towelettes.

another question, how is the smell? It is really strong and/or offensive? Generally DEET isn't too bad, but citronella is really strong and can be tiering.

I don't believe it to smells strongly at all. I got out my can and here are the active ingredients which I believe are plant extracts (I'm no expert).

Geraniol 20%
Mint 1%
Rosemary 1%.

I called the company and explained that I was interested in the product since I really did not like Deet. They sent out the free samples which seemed to really work well. I purchase it over the counter for $4.95 for the 4 oz spray can. I won't be going back to the other stuff.

This stuff is sounding better all the time, and if it does in fact work I will switch. If I never have to slather on the deet again that would be just peachy with me!!

I've never used the extracts, but have used the plants. IMHO, it is the only way to go. Even better than the bands (never tried those either) because it seems to me you would need a band for every exposed area of your body. I can't see how a wrist band would protect your ankles, neck and ears. And I hate DEET and the like. You can buy the essential oils of those plants from health stores and make your own mists/bands etc., or just grow the plants for a rubdown. You'll notice the plants are pest free, as is the area around them.

You know I never even considered making my own. That's a great idea expecially that we now know what the commercial mixture rate that was found to be most effective.

Thanks
