Bug Out Bag Question

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm wondering. A BOB is for when? When the "Rule of Law" is gone from the land? During a natural or man-made disaster? Reason for my question is this:

In NJ, I can keep loaded guns in my home legally. But when I leave, to go to the range shooting, etc., they have to be unloaded etc. So if I "bug out" with loaded guns, technically I am breaking the law. So, .....anybody get where I'm going with this?:o

I would think that if the situation is such that a BOB is needed, the rule of law would be a moot point.

discussing what you might do in a social crisis, where there was no expectation of 'Rule of law'..

can APPEAR to be recommending illegal activities.

The hypothetical aspects tend to blur a little and such discussions make lots of folks nervous.

Breaking the law may, hypothetically, at some point be necessary.

Claiming you *will* break the law.. is NOT necessary.

If you're willing to ignore regulations in an effort to protect ones self or family..

are you not willing to prevaricate, dissimulate, and mislead.. in that same endeavor?

I don't mind discussing hypothetical scenarios, because I am trying to get a feel for what other people are hypothetically prepared for. I'm also not quite paranoid enough to believe that such discussions will or could lead to the government (or whoever) putting a red flag next to my internet connection information. If you believe that, then probably anyone who has received a seemingly unpatriotic email (or even gone on a knife discussion forum) would already be flagged.
This was still the USA, last time I checked.

You're more likely to need a BOB when, say, there's a fire or some sort of police incident and you're told you need to clear out of your home. What would you want to have with you, if you could only grab it in the form of a bug-out bag on the way out the door?

There are many situations that does not involve total society breakdown.
Here are some examples:
Your very old neighbour passes over to the next world. His relatives clears out his place and find an old stick grenade he has taken as a souvenir during WWII. You might have to leave your place while the EOD guys take it away.
The neighbour next door has welding equipment in his garage and it catches fire. You have to get outside the danger.
In European cities this scenario is not uncommon: "Bob the Builder" and his gang is putting up a new shopping centre and stumble on a 500 kilo bomb that didnt go boom sixty years ago.
You see, it doesnt have to be zombies to justify a BOB.

I myself is getting a proper EDC when travelling by car or by train. It is not far to travel but the weather might create delays for hours. Some water, some food and a bunch of light sticks might be enough.

The laws are a funny thing WC. NJ is full of vagueness where weapons are concerned.

Consider your statement that you can keep a loaded weapon in your house legally in NJ. If you have children, not so. It can be loaded, but it must be locked in a secure manner and inaccessable to any children. And if you want to use it, guess what? NJ is NOT a "Castle State" so if someone attacks you in your home, legally you have to run out the back door or jump through a window if possible before attempting to defend yourself or your family. Assisted opening knives (NOT autos, ASSISTED OPENING) are sold in NJ, but illegal to possess. Carrying a fixed blade in public is illegal.

So the best advice I can give a fellow NewJerseyite Under communist oppression that is forced, or chooses of their own volition to "bug out" is:

It is all about "intent". Leaving with loaded weapons, or unloaded weapons in NJ for the purpose of defending yourself is an illegal act.

Listen closely....YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DEFEND YOURSELF IN NEW JERSEY WITH A WEAPON....PERIOD. You are not allowed to possess ANY weapon for defense. The closest you can get is 3/4 oz of pepper spray. All firearms and knives are illegal to carry for defense. Stun guns are illegal, PR-24's and night sticks are illegal. Slingshots are illegal. BB guns require a firearms ID card.

If you have a reasonable fixed blade knife in your camping gear for use in camp, your "intent" was a legal one and you should be fine.

Technically speaking, you would have to commit the crime of illegal weapons transport to make it to the border of another state which has more common sense, then you are legal with the aformentioned firearms.

I use the BOB acronym loosely. I have two. I keep a SHTF bag in my weapons locker at home but I carry a BOB everywhere I go that has more of a tactical briefcase type look.

I carry this bag with me everywhere I go as if it is my briefcase. In it I have:

A Blind Horse neck knife
A spare folder
Compact binoculars
Compass
A spare tritium watch
Spyderco Harp tool set
A small Allen Wrench set
My wallet
Some spare contacts lenses
Some paracord
Some rubber bands
Some money and change
My Blackberry
A camera and charger and cables for download
A Spyderco Sharpmaker
A loaded strop
An AG Russell ceramic sharpener
A steel
A Springfield XD9 Sub Compact and IWB holster
A Kel Tec P3AT

It should help get me through any unexpected day ;)
