Bug out radio?

Just wondering what others think is a good radio for the bug out bag. Currently I carry a Sony Walkman FM stereo when I'm working outdoors. It has a few advantages: It's inexpensive, light, relatively small, rugged - I've lost track of the number of times I've dropped it, and it still works. It also runs for quite a while (days)on a single AA battery. The disadvantages: not waterproof/water resistant; limited to FM only.

I'm interested in supplementing this general use radio with something more useful. The FRS radios, particularly the Motorola 6310, look interesting. So do some of the travel (AM/FM/SW) radios. Any ideas are welcome.

I some times work in the basement of a building of solid cement and steel, where radio reception is very problematic. Most expensive am/fm radios and stereos will not receive transmissions in that environment, including my Sony and my bosses' Aiwa. I recently bought a cheapo $5.00 Lenoxx Sound sports radio from Walmart - lo and behold - it works in that office. I guess I have to reevaluate the term "cheapo."

In '91 we lost power for 11 days due to an ice storm. well after a couple days I simply moved into my parents home (they winter in Florida). But one thing I learned during the time at my home was that I did not have a battery operated radio! I bought a small am/fm plus TV channel radio from radio shack.I want to hear the Tv news at times like that and this fills the bill.Takes 3 aa and i have a couple hundred of those on hand at all times.Thats right 200,theres a place where all those one time use cameras go for recycling and they have truck loads of batteries from inside the cameras and they give them out to people in uniform:) ,they have about 80% of a full charge.
