I was going to say that it looked like some type of huge wood beetle of some type. Or, on the other hand, the last 10 minutes of Starship Troopers. :D
 
Good thing you didn't mess with it( I know you didn't because your not in pain). They got some a nasty self defense
 
he climbed over a stick, and i moved him in the grass between some trees, where i thought it was safer for him, at least for the day :D
he didn't seemed alarmed or anything, didn't even try to escape, as if he knew i didn't want to kill it, but what do i know about bugs ? :D
 
don't let your cats touch that thing. I'm glad you ID'd it. Some of the beetles in that genus can spray. You near texas/arizona?

something I heard before about
bugs in general,
if they move slow and dont seem care about you,
they probably have some kind of defense,like poisonous to the touch
maybe it was les stroud i saw that on...
anyway,cool bug
 
Well those in particular are also known as blister beetles- they excrete a chemical from there joints and such that cause any where it contacts to form into a patch of painful blisters
