I am looking at purchashing a Bugei Trading Company Katana. Would appreciate any info you have on their quality, strength, and reliability. Looking at their standard models especially their CRANE MODEL. I want a Katana that I can actually use to train with, for real cutting, that can take a beating and will be the only sword I will own and last a Life time. $1000 is a lot of money to me so I would apprecitate any advice. Thanks.

While I don't own one, I believe anything wearing the Bugei name will offer some good performance. Their pieces also look very traditional and very well constructed.

On a side note, I have been looking for a Katana myself, not for formal training, but for fun and just plain cutting stuff. While not traditional in any sense of the word, Rob Criswell offers some great swords at very reasonable prices (approx. $400) that are well known for being tough. Something like this would be perfect for my needs, but there is no denying the Bugei blades are much better looking, more traditional and have more character. For a blade you will be using a lifetime, and if you can swing it (hahaha, bad pun!), I think something like the Bugei blade is the way to go.

Those swords are actually made by Hanwei (a company own and operated by Paul Chen) in China. They use one of the best material : swedish powder steel. I own the Tiger katana (Bugei doesn't have it anymore) and teh L6 Bainite by Howard Clark (HC makes the custom lines).

The Tiger has seen a lot of action. I cut heavy target at least once a week with it. It is a great sword for the money.

The Crane is one of their thinner/lighter sword. If you want somethign hefty, go with the Bamboo katana or the Samurai katana.

They are considered good swords for practicing kata/tameshigiri.

Enjoy.

I thought if you (or anyone that you know) was looking for a katana, you would find my piece in the "For Sale - Production" Forum :)

Buge is also one of the best companies out there for customer service. I hear that Ted Tenold (the guy who polishes their custom pieces) and his apprentice Jesse Pelayo look over each sword to make sure that the fittings are on right, the wrap (ito) is good, etc. They have their own forum for vhatting with other Bugei ustomers/employees/friends. And one of the best things I like about Buge is that they are very public. They attend BLADE show, they have their forum, they have their own dojo for training, etc. They really put themselves out there, so their service would have to be tops. Which I hear is really is.
