This knife has a 5 3/4" low layer random pattern blade made from an old buggy spring & saw blade. It is 1 1/4" at the widest part. The handle is antler with black micarta & brass spacers. The oal is 10 3/4" long.

The billet was forged at the shop and with the help of Bruce Evans "Thanks Bruce"

Any comments, again would be most appreciated.

Very very nice. I love that style handle, sort of a retro-fifties-marbles style to it that is timeless.

Any comments???

WOW, beautiful! That knife really stands out! I love what you did with the whole package...GREAT damascus!

Thanks guys for your kindness and time. The feedback was most appreciated.

This piece allowed me to use old steel with a history of sorts, wich is one of the reasons I got into forging. I love the look on peoples faces when you tell them this knife was forged from this or that, especially if it's somthing they can relate to from the past or a job related item. My "job" keeps me in the woods for the most part and we're stumbling upon old abandon barns and house sites from time to time, wich usualy turns up somthing that will work nicely in a blade. Once more, thanks everybody.

How can you tell that two different materials like the old buggy spring and saw blade are different enough in makeup to create a contrasting pattern?
Or is does it make any difference since 2 pieces of metal are being forge welded together?
I always thought they had to be of contrasting makeup or alloy in order to get the layered pattern, is that not correct?

I have always assumed that material such as chainsaw or similar chain had two different materials in their makeup, like one for hardness and wear and the other for shear strength and ductility and that was enough to have a pattern come up.

I think I'm correct in thinking that any steels of two contrasting alloys can be folded too many times causeing what pattern that may come up to be finer and finer until it disappears completly.
Would that be correct?

The thinking was that the spring, due to it's age was just a plane carbon steel. The saw blade however, (L6) has nickle and chromium, this and the fact that the billet had less than 100 layers in it would hopefully give us some good contrast in the pattern.

After this weekend, may be a while Les but for sure, the first chance I get!!!!!!!!
