Here's one of my old haunts, the Bugles and Tigers bar at the Everest Hotel. I used to pay 60 rupia for a beer here and now it has gone up to 240 -- a good day's wages for most Nepalis. Perhaps that is the reason we were the only customers in the bar.

I found the bugles and took pix but found no tigers.

You'll notice a couple of old kothimodas hanging on the wall. The HI version is considerable better. Walls are decorated with Gorkha memorabilia.

Seated are Uncle Bill, Yangdu, Gelbu, Nabin Karmacharya, and Pradeep.

Khukuri FAQ

:
Uncle Bill it is nice to see a place where the country's soldiers are honord like that.
It's too bad that there aren't more places in the states that do that.
About th only places I have seen here are the ones at the military bases and such.
There's a nice museum for the 45th Infantry Div. down at Okie City.
That Division is now the 45th Infantry Brigade.
The 45th saw a lot of action in WW II and in Korea.
Some people thought they weren't really well trained, but the facts are that they held their areas at great cost. Well trained or not there were several units that had Presidential Commendations. I was proud to be in one of them.

Khukuri FAQ

Years ago when I was a newbie in Nepal the Bugles and Tigers bar used to stand the first drink to any veteran of military service -- even old sailors like me. They don't do that anymore but it is still a nice place to sip a beer and since it's on the top floor you can also enjoy a commanding view of the Kathmandu Valley.
