Recommendation? Bugout vs Ti Pyrite?

OK hear me out on this one... when comparing the standard S30V Bugout with the $200 Pyrite (S90V and Ti scales), is the Bugout better in terms of quality, action, durability, etc., or are they comparable? Didn't know if the Pyrite was just a "budget knife wearing fancy hardware".

Reason for asking, as mentioned in a previous post, I lost my Bugout (custom 20CV with CF Elite scales) last month and am looking for a replacement. I bought it before BM's price hikes and that's been a tough pill to swallow. I liked my Bugout, but discovered I really like the ergos on the Pyrite, maybe a bit more than the Bugout. But don't want to be disappointed long term, my older Bugout held out extremely well before it walked out on me. Tried the Deka, wasn't for me, didn't feel right in my hand.

The Buck 841 is another option. Satisfies my needs at that price range. BOS Heat treat S45VN. Carbon Fiber scales.

I'd get the pyrite just for a change of pace. But see if you can find any long-term reviews on the regular pyrite first. Although it hasn't been out nearly as long as the bugout.

You don’t have to spend $200 for an upgraded Pyrite. KnifeCenter has several “premium” Pyrites with Titanium and Micarta for less than $75. The blade steel is AR-RPM9, but I’ve been very satisfied with that as an upscale, budget steel. Besides, S90V sucks to sharpen.

Pick out your premium Pyrite (also check out “Perfect Pyrite” at Kickstarter) and then buy a used Bugout on the Exchange. You can have your cake and eat it too!

Good to know, both about the steel and KnifeCenter. Thanks!

I'd like the second the idea of getting a cheaper Pyrite. The reason the Pyrite is popular is its price/value, so getting an expensive one kinda ruins its biggest selling point. The AR-RPM9 steel is decent in my experience. Also check out WhiteMountainKnives's exclusive Pyrites; they have several. They have a very sweet frag-pattern on aluminum scales for like $55.

Then you'll still have extra money left over to buy a second knife. If you choose to do so.

A $200 Pyrite? I'd personally rather spend that on a Bugout. But I also don't like metal scales...

I think you should get the Pyrite. Then look on Youtube for a video called "Did the Benchmade Bugout Break?", do all the same stuff to the Pyrite, and tell us how it turns out. :) BTW, S90V is not hard to sharpen with diamond plates.

I have thought about getting a Pyrite, but I am really put off by the name, which seems to be hinting that anybody who buys one is a fool.

I own a few Bugouts and I've never handled a Pyrite so I can't objectively compare them. But I do see that the Bugout has thinner stock at .09in vs the Pyrite's .11in. Probably something to keep in mind.
