Hello all!

A little while back I was contacted by a guy who's been a champion in Buhurt full-contact medieval fighting competitions. He wants to further pwn the competition and became curious about the possibility of a titanium longsword for a little extra edge in the tournaments. This is the result, a blunt forged out of titanium alloy and made to conform to exact specifications required by the league.

It's 52.5" in overall length, and weighs just a hair over 1.7 kilograms or 3.75 pounds, which for one of my swords is extremely heavy, even at this size, but it's the minimum allowable weight. The blade has a mild diamond section and distal thickness taper, with a point of balance 1.5-2" forward of the TOTALLY INVINCIBLE titanium handguard. Steel pommel was provided by the customer.

The competitor and I believe this will be the first titanium alloy longsword to ever be used in Buhurt competition, but we're not totally sure. Results will be posted after this thing is utterly and mercilessly thrashed.

Pretty cool! My first thought though was that the "little extra edge" would be the reduced weight, but if there is a minimum weight, what is the primary benefit of going with titanium?

I pondered the same thing. I think this one may move a bit more nimbly, with more weight in the hilt, and also most of the steel ones weigh more - this one is right at the lower limit. Also titanium hits really hard. For its weight it's just...big. The handguard is probably 100x stronger than the thin little steel ones, for example.

He said this sword will give him a lot of reach.

I was thinking of you today, wondering what you been up to. Cool shit, by the look of it!

learned something new today. never heard of that.

it's interesting, bet fun to watch....Im also assuming folks dont get badly hurt, least I hope not. anyways cool long sword......

They are super rough and full-contact, they get hurt a lot and sometimes very badly. They lose fingers and stuff. The guy I made this for specifically wanted a wider, more blunted crossguard just to make sure he doesn't punch a quillon through someone's face again by accident. Busted right through the armor and through the cheek and bashed out a bunch of teeth. I guess it was quite a mess.

I made a few blunts for the U.S. Battle of the Nations team a few years back, and met the team a few times. They're all super strong from sparring and practicing all the time with heavy weapons and armor, and taking big hits.

Here's the old thread on those other blunt weapons:
