I just ordered one of the paperstone 112's on Bucks Web Special page and it just got me to thinking just how cool build outs really are! Most are made in limited numbers...7,15,25,50 or less are common..You can find really neat one's with rare handle materials, odd blade steels, unusual cutouts, combinations of different models,All sorts of odd configurations! A lot of collectors like something different and/or rare and build outs sure are that! I love my 118 in D2..One just sold on the bay for than DOUBLE the cost from Buck! I see that many times on E;bay...A build out will be sold by Buck for say $60.00 or so and EASILY will be re-sold for $90.00 to $120.00 or more! But even more important to me is the fact many are just a cool, great knifes! The only thing I wish Buck would do is to NOT sell any at there factory store but ONLY on the Website and at BCCI GTG's and shows...I see a few sellers on the bay that live close to the store and will snatch up some of the nicest, coolest build outs and that means Collectors sometimes miss.....So what is Your favorite ????? For a EDC I like/love my D2 118 [Scary Sharp!] and the 112 that came out 6 months or so ago. It had chipflint BCCI blade, jigged bone and wood handles..It was a heck of a deal!! [$60.00 ????]

I picked up one of those D2 Personals too. I really like it ! It resides in the console of my truck! Not sure if that white handled Duke on their web special page is a build out, But I am wishing I could get one!

The Duke is a buildout too. I bought a couple and they are really nice.

What you mean to say is that build outs are good economy knives of no real value but they serve their purpose. They are made from the scraps of the more valuable knives. They are great for thrift shoppers who don't mind the lower quality. They have no resale value, for this reason their prices are low. They really aren't worth a dealer's time. :)

Wow, don't sugar coat it like that! Tell us how you really feel about 'em.;)

So, if the build outs are left overs from a LE run then how big are some of these runs ?
I didn't see the run on that 118 w/ D2 steel . Are some of these straight market test jobs ? DM

LOL,to late!:eek:They're already selling for 100% mark-up on the bay.:barf:

Yep, one of the local Post Falls eBay sellers has at least made nearly double on one of the cowbone 110's . It's at $100 and the auction isn't over yet.

David M, that's a good question or questions... ITE ...

Man, The web site must be busy tonight! It took me three attempts to order the white Duke! I kept getting a message saying my card number was wrong, so I called my brother and he tried to place an order and got the same message. I kept trying untill it went thru.My Brother had to get on board with 2 knives for him and my nephew! I hope we don't wind up getting 9 by mistake! Can't wait to see these!

Dave,

It looks like the year tang stamp is not the same on these two....or is it just me?

Nope, it's not just you John. I did a double take when I first looked at my picture and got the knives out again to check. I have no idea what trick my camera used to cause that one (one on the right) to look like a C, but they are both left pointing arrows.

Thanks for the pic Dave. Those are some sweet looking 500's! The Chip flint is a real looker too, But I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of whether one would be a good useful knife or just a display. Don't get me wrong, I like a few safequeen knives, But I also like to see function in a knife. Just thinking out loud! I would love to have one just for the sake of it's beauty!

I have several with the chipped flint blades and only one of them came sharp enough to use as a letter opener. Perhaps they could be sharpened by someone who could do it and not mess up the blade, but I doubt they would make a good user. It just looks to me that the rough texture of the blade would make it a lousy cutter.

As far as I'm concerned, they are show knives, not users.
