So, I have been a Spyderco fan for decades. I have always thought the Endura and the Delica were among the best designed and best looking knives (eye of the beholder) out there for every day General use. Now, my brother is a little less particular about brand loyalty, and recently went with a Benchmade Griptilian. It's a great knife, no doubt. But the thing that I found interesting was that Benchmade allows you to design and receive a 'customized' Knife. They allow you to pick the color of the scales, the blade shape, the blade color, and even the blade opening method. I think it would be an amazing selling feature to open up that kind of idea to the Delica and the Endura. Being able to pick the blade type, scale color, and blade color, would make lots of people pretty happy. Heck, we could even throw in G10 scales. Again, different selections would increase the cost to a premium, but you would end up with the knife you want.

And, if white was offered again as a scale color, Rit dye opens the doors to PRECISELY the shade you want.

Am I crazy? Would the Spyderco fans out there like something like this?

There was a thread about this same "custom shop" idea a few months ago.
It seemed to have been shot down from what I vaguely remember.

shot down?!?

well buck and benchmade does it and I doubt they are losing money over it. I guess it would come down to the owner's personal philosophy on the matter. Has that been expressed by them?

That sounds like an awesome idea.

P.S.-
I'll take mine in damascus with Dymondwood scales!!!

I can't find that thread now, but I think it came down to limited resources and personnel. A request like this may please some few people, but overall would probably result in pushing back MANY of the other knives that are already in queue and delaying them for production, just so they could try to coordinate lining up some colored handles and blades steels for customers who want to feel "custom".
Sal said they are not a custom shop, but a production house, and they only have enough personnel to do what they do.

I'm sure other companies do this similar process. It seems to be a common thing. Also becoming a "thing" in cycling, where customers can order their own color frames and other components on a bike, rather than box stock...

Obviously things change, so maybe one day Spyderco will feel the pressure to dedicate the manpower to sorting the logistics.
I don't think they'd be doing it for the sake of chasing a money maker.

I for one am very happy with what Spyderco is currently doing and how they are doing it.
If true custom work is actually desired, there is a very skilled base of craftsman all working on Spyderco models.

From that last thread it's apparently a question that comes up regularly.

I would definitely be in on one.

It may be easier to accomplish this with the golden models instead of the seki models.

How is it going to be easier?
People can't even get their hands on a regular production Paramilitary 2 right now, nor a S110V Military, etc. etc.

Yes, he has. Over the 13 years I've been on these forums the custom shop idea has come up many times and Sal has always said it's just not feasible. FWIW, I'm sure the fact that the two companies you mentioned are both larger has a lot to do with them being able to offer that service. Even if Spyderco were to expand their US production facility to the point where creating a custom shop would not interfere with normal production, the model (or models) offered would have to be made there. And, as others have noted, the ones you've chosen are not.

I kinda like The "hunt".. Figure out what handle I want and what blade..
Sell the extras off.. There isn't much to lose, IMO..
G10 DF2 has a Hap40 blade. Hap40 handle got a serrated H1 blade and sold the yellow handled, vg10 blade. Cost me 15$, to have 2 of the Exact knife's I wanted..
Same with the G10 Delica and Endura. Hap blade's.. Sold the spawn off.. "Lost" a few bucks there too.. But well worth it, for having what I want! :)

Probably cheaper then having a custom option, at Spyderco.

Now, I think Spyderco could do the next best thing and create a kit with two different blades and two different scales. I think this would be pretty neat. Heck they could even market it as a Frankenstein.

Of course, then there's the whole warranty void for taking apart the knife. But there are warranty and liability ways to get around that whole thing, just takes some thought on their part.
