If you had 100$ and had to build a basic hiking kit from scratch what would you add?
make a list with prices and the reasoning behind it if you like.
mine:
army surplus bag 8$
mora clipper 10$
SAK hiker 20$ (would prefer the farmer but hiker has more tools and is also cheaper go figure)
100 ft paracord 7$
GSI cup and nalgene bottle 15$
ferro rod and GG striker 5$
2 X-large bandana 4$
few boxes of matches 1$
gerber slide saw 10$
some coghlans fire sticks 3$
a good compass 5$
whistle 2$
either and opinel or some good hiking food for the last 10$-EDIT switched for a diamond pocket stone

so what would YOU get?

I prefer saws to machetes, around my area machetes dont do much on dried and hard woods I have damaged a few and hurt my wrist trying to get through some pine, the swiss army is not needed I guess but I love them in the woods TP is good and there is allways some around the house, fire sticks are a must for me very cheap and saves time firemaking, I do practice without them just incase but for being that damn cheap its really a waste not to take them, but each to there own.

Great choices btw.

Alice pack at my local surplus store-$30......a pack to put all my stuff in??

Mora Triflex-$15......I love this knife, and it's has a nice sheath for moras.

Dollar store jute twine spool, ALOT of jute twine-$1.......it's catches sparks easy

LMF Scout-$10.....To start a fire using sparks.

100ft 550 cord- $11 at my local surplus store......shelter, keeping my pack high enough for bears, using the 7 strands for fishing line.

Big Walmart tarp-$15.......shelter.

Army canteen and gi cup-$13 at my local surplus store.......To carry water in, and the gi cup for cooking food and boiling water in.

Good quality whistle-$3.......In case I get trapped and I need to signal for help.

Bic Lighter-$2.......Another backup source of fire.

fishing hooks-$3.......to pair with the 7 strands inside paracord for fishing.

Sharpening stone-$7......keep my tool sharp.

from the recycling bin i would grab a #10 can for a billy tin, and a smaller can for a cup.

Where are you buying those GB axes for $ 80 ???

I'll take 10 at that price

You can drop a whole $3 US into a BSA Hot Spark - cheaper, lighter and less bulky than the others and they seem to me to be on par with my LMFs.

Where's Simon when you need him? He's good at this kind of thing.

Something to collect, carry and boil water in, like a GI canteen, would come in mighty handy.

how about a wetterlings, mora, paracord, purification tablets, breastmilk bags, bic lighter, and fiskars sliding saw instead of the GB?

Might be an idea to include insulating clothing and rain gear. Good thread though.

Six pack of domestic beer $5.00

Carl-

maybe put a tarp in there instead of three knives. Or a foam pad. Or a blanket.

Well, I would definitely get a Mora, probably a SL-1. Also, you can pick up SAK Climbers from Feline Vet for like $12. A few extra $ for other goodies.

Hiking? If that means no overnighters then you really don't need much. Opinel pocketknife, bic lighter and matches, water bottle, small backpack, whistle, compass.

National Forest map - $10

Brunton baseplate compass - $10

surplus USGI Poncho Liner - $15

8'x10' poly tarp - $10

MSR one quart stainless steel, latchable lid cook pot - $12

Mora Clipper knife - $10

Fire kit, cordage, first aid and related items scrounged for Free

$99 bucks for an efficent and lightweight hiking kit, and overnight possibly
