I have limited space and funds but here are my objectives:Build a Knife

1.learn how to grind and learn about flat grinding
2.Design, layout and profiling
3.handle preperation and assembly
4.sharpen blade

If someone could point me in the right direction with some info on the right tools for the job, it would be greatly appreciated. Example..basic tools that I might need to complete my knife project...Grinder..etc.and possible name brands/websites.

I would recommend your first investment be the book, "$50 Knife Shop" by Wayne Goddard. It's available through Amazon.com. It's one man's "on the cheap" approach to minimalist knifemaking. It can provide some good ideas for getting started.

There are people who make knives with several hundred dollars of tools and those who have $30-50k invested in a shop. It thus becomes difficult to give you specific sound advice.

You can start with just a couple files, hacksaw, sandpaper and a drill/bits and with a lot of patience and effort make a fine knife. As in all things, tools make it easier.

There is a boatload of tutorial info available through the top sticky in this forum ( http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387503 ) and at www.knifehow.com

Do a little reading and it will allow you to ask more specific questions we can better answer.

Welcome!

Good advise ,Mike.
If this is your first plunge into the knife making pond, then a good start may be a kit knife.Daren Ellis at knifekit has all types.

Blades and kits are available from most all knife material suppliers, too.
You will learn about shape, style, handle mounting and shaping, finishing and sharpening by building a kit.
As Mike said,it van be a file or it can be a KMG grinder - both just remove steel. You came to a good place (bladeforums) to get a good start. Welcome!
