I would like to build a simple target for hawk throwing practice - I won't be more than 20 feet away. Getting a big ass log is not really an option so I was curious what others have done. thanks

You don't need a bigasslog but you do want an end-grain target.
Have you considered contacting a local tree service or such and asking for a cross-cut "slab"? 5 bucks or a cold 6-pack should be more than enough to get you a suitable round that would hold up to alot of hits.

Got two 8' 4"X4"'s from the local lumberyard. Cut them in half, held them together with some scrap lumber braces across the back, built some props to hold it upright, et voila. I throw hawks and knives at it. It's getting kind of chewed up, so one of these days I'll just unscrew the braces and props, screw them onto the chewed-up front side, and use the backs of the 4"X4"'s.

Once the 4"X4"'s are chewed up on both front and back, then I'll have a little bonfire :).

I have been throwing for years and have used the 2x4's glued together side by side. I then hang it from a frame outside. It absorbs the force if you have a miss and they don't rebound back at you. if they get chewed up they can be planed and put right back into sevice. It works good for knives as well as any other thrown item. Brad Roe, Guild Knives & Tools
