I haven't been in the flow lately concerning flashlights and especially Maglites. What's new and REAL BRIGHT for replacement bulbs for my 4 D cell Maglite? I've heard that there's now some good replacement bulbs that are really bright.

I mostly use my Surefires but just can't see getting rid of my ol' 4 cell Mag especially if there's some bright replacement bulbs out there.

Checkout Carley lamps.

I have 4 hi-cap Ni-Cad's in mine with a Carley Lamp and, although it's heavy, it puts out a beam like Luke Skywalker's light sabre.

...but there's a $50 minimum order.

Other bulbs you can get:

Eveready Halogen for the 6V lantern. The HPR 50. It is pretty good quality. The beam quality itself is bad though. Because of the shape of the bulb. All sorts of light/shadow striations.

Another one is the Radio Shack Xenon Bulb. The XPR 113. I have one but haven't put it in a flashlight yet.

I bought a Garrity Stainless 4AA from Sports Authority just for the xenon bulb. It is a good one. It's the Philips HPX 40. Rated at 4.8v and .79a. I wish Philips would sell these in a package. But right now it looks like all their xenon bulbs are found in flashlights only. The bulb is currently in my 4D Maglite and it makes a beautiful beam. And is brighter and whiter than Krypton bulbs.

Thanks for the info gents. I've tried Carely bulbs. The late, great Walt Welch sent me some a couple of years ago but I'd still like to find something brighter. Those Xenon bulbs sound intriguing David! I also seem to remember someone mentioning to me awhile back about a really bright replacement but it was in the $40.00 range, YIKES!
