What steel is the bulldog? carbon? 1095? unknown ss? it costs 60usd so is it worth it' (different from case or gec? in quality?)
I had a parker copperhead made by "IXL wostenholm" with laminated wood hanldes, is this the same one? 440C japan steel?

or any better copperhead knives? love the trapper but this one intrigues me :D but cannot find many around

thanks
Maxx

The Bulldog and probably the Parker have a high carbon steel like 1075. It is a good grade of non-stainless cutlery steel. $60 is fairly high pricing. It sharpens very well and holds an edge pretty well; they make pretty good users. The Bulldog you show has waterfall celluloid handles. Looks like the Parker has bone. There is an excellent chance they were both made in the same German factory.

If you buy the Bulldog, read up on celluloid. You will find out why it has lost favor as a knife handle material. I prefer the bone handle.

I prefer this style to the Case style. You can get a similar style from Boker and Queen as well as Rough Rider and Steel Warrior. I like the way they fit the hand.

Here is a thread with some photos and commentary about copperheads in general.

I prefer the Case Lg Copperhead, myself. I like the combination of a large clip and big pen blade. The pattern is currently "in the vault," but they are still available if you look around.

That Bulldog is nice, though.

I may go with the parker, costs 25usd and looks like the BD
just wanted to know if it's 440C like the IXL or carbon (would prefer it)

Jim Parker had seemingly thousands of different knives made that bear his name. most were made in Japan. some are quite well made with good steel, others not so. it's a bit of a crap shoot (hard to tell quality of knife until you have it in hand and use it some).

I like the large blade/pen blade combo on the Case as well. I just kinda favor the other handle shape just a touch. On the whole, I like them all. - Ed

The Parker is almost certainly a Japan stainless version. The Bulldog was made in both SS and Carbon at the Olbertz factory in Germany.

If you just want to try the pattern, a very good example can be had from Rough Rider for under $10.00. I really like mine.

Look around for a German Eye Brand Copper Head. Very nice quality in carbon steel for a lot less that a Parker or Bull Dog. The Rough rider knives are a very good value in a OK, so-so stainless steel.

being used to GECs and casexxs i'd like to stay on a quality oriented side
what steel are the german eye's? carl schlieper right?

thanks

Schlieper (Eye Brand) knives come in both stainless and non stainless, which i've read is 1095. The older Eye Brand Copperhead shows up on ebay fairly often. i have a few, excellent knife and their non stainless edge holds very well and gets plenty sharp. i think they are "best of the bunch".

I find the finish on Bulldogs to be questionable, rough raised springs on a couple of mine and the carbon never seems that keen after sharpening on others. The acrylic/celluloid handles can be nice(which they are I'm not sure).

A much better bet for Copperheads would be Böker in my experience, very decent fit and not expensive either.
