I got a bulldog stockman, hamer forged soligen steel,
Are the blades the same as carbon steel. I have had several carbon steel knives and when you use them for food etc they stain, they get that grey patina on them.
I heard that the blades on Bulldog knives can stain if I use them to cut into a apple etc.
What do you guys know ? Do they stain ?
I would hate to ruin that nice etching on the blade if they do .
thanks jack

Well stainless knives are just that, "stain-less", not "stain-proof". If the blades are marked "solingen steel" , more than likey its 420. the 420 from solingen, much of it originates in sweden so its pretty pure stuff, not too many impurities. Will it stain? Well any solingen steel can stain if not cared for, much less likely than any carbon steel of course. If you wipe it off after using it on fruit, it should be fine. Just dont wait to long to oil it. You can even use cooking, or vegatable oil, if your using it to eat with (since, in that case you would not want top use any petroleum products).

The hammer brand knives being made right now, are pretty decent quality, the small factory, cant rmember their name right now in solingen, has been doing a decent job in recent years. Parker (before he redcenyl passed) was pretty good about staying on them about quality.

You'll probaly be okay, just remember to wip it off and oil it with soemthing later.

so Rev, is that a no it wont stain under normal usage, or yes it will stain ? I got plenty of trappers and stockmans, I can use this one with its pearly handle for just dress up stuff ( thats why I originally bought it ) , Although, I have been known to whip out my knife in a $ 50. dollar resturant and use it to cut the steak, Resturant knives usually suck big time .
I got a Schrade stockman that I sometimes use for EDC, cuts up sandwiches, fruit, spreads mayo, mustard, never stained. But its 440 something A or C I dont know. But it dont stain. I usually pretty good about wiping it clean, but I never had to reoil it. In fact I got a double duty kershaw that has seen its use to on food and its never stained either. Just recently, I used it to build a sandwich, spread my mayo, wiped the blade and put it back in my pocket. Next time I pulled it out I saw smears where the mayo was still coating the blade. Still no stain. I understand the differances in steel.
I just dont want to stain this knife. The main blade got real nice etching on it and its a "purity" knife, pearl handle and all. The main blade has " some kind of latin " printed on it, with a 2000 bulldog. It 's a looker.
Thanks and good knife hunting
Jack

Most Bulldogs are carbon steel, unless noted in the catalog or item description as being otherwise. My Bulldog stag stockman is carbon steel and it will stain. Unless you are saving it for collector value in the future, don't worry about the patina that developes on your blades, its part of the charm of carbon steel. I've only noted one Bulldog as being stainless and thats a oddball anyway, its a slipjoint designed to be taken apart, to be cleaned I guess. Don't remember the model no., but SMKW stocks them if you want to look it up.

On the Bulldogs I have, or have seen, the stamp says.....

BULLDOG BRAND
HAMMER FORGED
SOLINGEN-GERMANY
That is the carbon steel stamp.

If it reads.....

BULLDOG BRAND
HAMMER FORGED
SURGICAL INST.
SOLINGEN-GERMANY
That is the stainless (stains less, as rev_jch said) steel stamp.
