Bullet-Proof Folders

Folders have all the inherent disadvantages of the folding and locking mechanisms - ie: weakness in pivots and the actual locks themselves.

But which are the ones you would consider as close to "bullet-proof"?

Here's my list:

Mostly Frame-Locks from makes-your-eyes-water prices down to under $20.....

I include the Benchmade Axis 710 - because it's one of my favorite large folders, and the Axis lock seems tough to me. However for me an Axis lock has to have full and thick liners as on the 710 - much as I like the Griptillians - their partial liners don't do it for me in terms of being "bullet-proof" - or for having one's life depend on it.........

However if truth be known -
my life probably would depend on a simple SAK with its NON-locking slip-joint blade - since it's actually my EDC........

So what is your choice(s) for a "bullet-proof"/life depends on it knife?

for an absolutely bullet-proof/lifedepends on it knife I would have to say a Strider AR or SnG. I don't think you can get much more bullet-proof then that.

Also in the list would be the large and small Sebenza and the Flashover and Firetac (regular, extreme and 165) from Rick Hinderer.

Other knives that I've never handled but that may fit the bill would be the BM630 and the Cuda Maxx and Dominator.

I'm sure there are many others, but those are the first ones that come to my mind.

My old Buck 112 took plenty of abuse for about 20 years and was sometimes used as a hammer, those big brass bolsters help. I believe some Buck 110 and similar Schrade LB7 were made with steel pivots and their locks seem strong enough to me, the 420HC steel is tougher than many super steels IMHO.

Edited, just remembered that I have a couple of pics of my LB7:

i agree with you regarding the Vapor series. i also would add the SS Delica and/or Endura. i think i could throw these two off the Empire State Building, pick 'em up, and keep on usin'.... also, no matter what i do to my CRKT M16, the thing will just not quit.

Probably the Greco folder. Not the slickest or the fastest opening but it has to be one of the toughest.

I'd say the Strider and Greco folders are literally bullet-proof. The Extrema Ratio, Buck Strider, and MOD CQD probably are, too.

I'd have to add the Masters of Defense Tempest. It has a nice thick 154 CM blade and has one of the thickest liner locks I've ever seen. You can see a picture of it here http://www.folders-r-us.org/full_tests.htm, just click on the MOD Tempest review. The aluminum handle adds a lot of bulletproofness to it too. :)

The old Benchmade Emerson 975 sbt. I everything with it, it never failed and is still functional and razor sharp now

Buck Strider 880T Haven't fully tested the thing yet, but from the looks of the liners, blade shape and thickness, this one would be hard to kill.

Victorinox Swisschamp. Not a joke. Had a Swisschamp for years and it just wouldn't die one me.

Camillus EDC, Benchmade 905 Mini Stryker,Benchmade 630 Skirmish, I have a Smith&Wesson Carbon fiber, S.W.A.T. 2000 thats pretty d@mn tough also. Spyderco Worker, Delica, Endura, Calypso Jr. Kershaw Vapor &VaporII, Leek, Storm. Lots of tough folders out there. The only limit is how much your willing to pony up. Just my .02, Marty

You want the most bulletproof? A Scott Cook Lochsa. Makes even the Sebenza look weak. Though, it will cost ya.

The original poster seems concerned mostly with the pivot/lock strengths over blade or edge toughness.

Going by this criteria, the Niemi Centerlock Megaladon is by far the strongest locking knife probably ever made.

I remember reading about this folder a year ago or so. Almost forgot about it.

I have a carbon steel EKA swede 60 wood that I consider being a very tuff bastard of a knife. Thick, hevvy, the pivot screw can be exchanged and so can the sideslabs if nessisarry. Its a backlock witch I consider best on a knife you use in a way that its bound to be destroyed even if it were a fixed blade.
For real harduse its better than for example my BM AFCK that seams weak if you compare them. Witch I like better is another story though ;)

I just picked up a Spyderco Manix. Wow what a knife, its plenty beefy, and has G10 handle and a CPMS30V steel blade. It is a very nice H-D folder.

A balisong. Probably a Benchmade. No lock to fail.
