Just went up to the California Custom Knife Show, which, of course, I was looking forward to. Since I wasn't after a specific knife, I could come a little later, avoid the crowds that mob the place when it opens, and be able to meet knife makers and chat in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Only one problem. The show is held in a hotel right near Disneyland, a central location. It's on a strip of hotels and restaurants, so if the place where the show is held is booked, there might be rooms available nearby.

Something different today. Turns out that in the hotel right next to the show hotel, an armed parolee violating the law is holed up, refusing to come out, and may have a woman present. This is a very big deal. A major swat team is on the scene, helicopters everywhere, lots of police covering every possible escape route for blocks.

And all the streets leading to the hotel totally shut down. Blocked. The hotel is completely inaccessible.

I may try and go tomorrow, but I really put aside time today, and I'm not sure what I can do later. Also, generally by Sunday a lot of vendors pack up early, or don't even show. Given the situation today, that might change, but who knows?

Bummer. To put it very, very politely.

Tell them you're a freelance media reporter and you need an escort to to the blade show that you've been assigned to cover. Your audience here is waiting for your detailed report.:D

Crazy! I saw that as I was leaving. Hopefully you can make the show tomorrow.

Wow! I must have left just before this all started.

I picture a scene from a movie where the guy evades the cops, runs into the Embassy Suite Ballroom, and is surrounded by 500 guys carrying 2000 knives.

It wasn't too bad. Took me less than 5 mins to go around it, but I work nearby and know the layout of the streets.

I don't mean to be a jerk about it. Just the streets in that area are all N/S or E/W in a grid. It is very easy to flip a u turn, go over a few blocks and continue back on your way. It's a silly analogy, but think of the Pac-man map. If you can't go this way, go that way. It was an inconvenience, but it should not have kept anyone from getting to the show. Though, I'm sorry it did.
