 I had been pondering buying a Bunker Fire steel for some time now. I already own several different types but wanted to try this one out.So a couple of days after I ordered, it lands in the mail box.Pulled it out of the box and set the instruction sheet on the picnic table and gave it a try.It comes with a black coating that comes off with use and my first strike produced a shower of sparks. The second strike was down to the bare metal and loads of molten metal gobs sprang forth just as a wasp flew by about a foot away from my hand. One of the 5,500 degree gobs of molten metal hit that wasp dead center and it spiraled sideways down to earth like a helicopter that got hit by a RPG! I was thinking dang, what were the odds of that happening when I noticed the instruction sheet on the picnic table had burst into flames.:oLol,imho this is the mother of all fire steels.:D

Yeah I had a large fire steel and it almost lit my house on fire. The metal globs hit the brick on the fireplace and started to dance toward the carpet.

Lol,definitely for outdoor use. I think the Bunker would last at least a life time.
5 inches long and one half inch thick.

That's a killer combo right there. My last few fire steels have been pre-drilled. Love em.

Ok, agreed. Firesteels are a lot of fun, reliable and will last a lifetime. However, how many BIC lighters (or CLIPPER, which I think are better) can you carry for the weight of that huge firesteel?:D

Firesteels are a plan B tool. Actually you'd have to carry a backpack full of BIC's to get as many fires as you'd get from this one firesteel.

Agreed as well. However the joy of BIC lighters (or any lighter for that matter) is that you produce a flame which is more likely to ignite humid material... not just a spark (or globs of molten metal) that will last only a couple seconds at best. I do enjoy playing with them as I find that they requiere better prepparation of the tinder and kindle which, at the end, teachs you good habits for making a fire.

And that's what the magnesium tinder rod is for.

I just picked one of the Bunkers up with the striker & tinder rod, and got a pile of slightly damp wood shavings lit up with just a couple showers of sparks. Scraped up a little pile of magnesium shavings on top of the wood and all it took was a good spark in the right place for the whole pile to light up. :D
