Well, I have received my new 15inch AK and 18th Century (aka WW2
) today, and can say that I'm very happy. First new khuks in a little while, and both are dull as a soggy noodle--which is fine!! You see, I can make them sharp easily, but my expected criticism of them can not be applied: Neither have the hollow ground/thin edges!! Both are robust to say the least. The 18th century has the beginnings of a genuine convex, and the AK has a thick flat grind that soon WILL BE convex.
This is really wonderful, as my primary reason for buying the 18th Century was to have a heavy chopper that I trusted more than the razor sharp but paper thin edge on my "!" 18inch AK. This new one is very nearly as massive, and even once it has been made sharp I feel I'll need a hammer to damage it. Karma (or Uncle Bill) was definitely with me here.
Speaking of the 18th century--whether it's the stereotype of this model or not, I like it! Good grinds all the way around, finished as well as any HI I own, and the grip is not only filling, but so long that I could nearly fit two hands if I wanted. This will give me lots of choking up/back room to play with, and I'll never fear it leaving my hand.
The AK will take a bit of work in the handle, as it is a Chiruwa and the scales move away from the tang in several spots, but there's plenty of info available here on how to deal with that, so as soon as I can devote an afternoon I'll fix it up. This is a small thing, and I'm very happy with its feel in hand. Bura seems to still have it.
Well, I'm going to chop air for a little bit. It's strange...one might think that this many khuks in, I'd be less enamored of a new one when it arrives. One would be wrong, though.
