Finally got thru via phone to Pala.

Bura got an MRI and a barrage of tests and what was first thought to be a tumor is a blood clot which the docs are going to try to dissolve with meds the best I can tell. I don't know enough about this stuff to know whether this is good news or bad. The docs told Bura he might have to stay on meds for the remainder of his life however long that may be.

Bura was released from the hospital but for some reason cannot speak except a weak whisper and cannot work. He came to BirGorkha the last couple of days for a few hours and tried to do some supervising but is very weak and really couldn't do much.

I don't know where this is going but I don't have a good feeling about it. I'd have preferred to get news that he'd undergone surgery, tumor removed, and prognosis good. Having a blood clot in the brain seems like a hangfire situation to me.

I guess meds and prayers is all we've got.

Bura knows of the generous contributions made on his behalf and sends his utmost gratitude to all. He whispered that even if he could not pound steel he would try to assure that everything going out the door of BirGorkha would be up to the highest HI standards. I guess he's what we might call a company man.

Stay tuned and many thanks from all of us.

I'm with you Uncle Bill, I don't know how to feel about that news:confused:

Continued prayers going out for his recovery...

I imagine that they've given Bura a drug like Warferin to thin the blood, I don't know if that would dissolve the blood clot though. I get a better feeling than the tumor prognosis, if only because once the blood clot is dissolved, and the pills are taken routinely it shouldn't come back.
Good to know he's on his feet, and keeping an eye on things. It shows his spirit is strong and that's half the battle won.

Jeff.

Prayers going out. Bura is one of the good guys, I pray he hangs in there and the meds do their work.

Where there's life, there's hope. Where there's hope, there's possibility. I don't know Bura personally, but I have some understanding of great crafstmen like him. He suffers most from not being able to do what he loves best. Prayers continuing from the Hindu Kush mountains:(

It's good news... I think. Any medical procedure that doesn't involve opening up the head is good.

Then again I graduated from the Jack Kevorkian School of Medicine.

for the recovery and well-being of Bura. A thought: for the many he has touched in his life, and in his work throughout the world. A hope: that all may live well, and fully.

We're all in this together, somehow.

Don't like the sound of this...

Sounds kinda like an almost or mild stroke--
That could maybe explain the speaking thing.
Fortunately, with time, a lot of recovery is possible in much worse cases--unfortunately, that corner of the world isn't known for physical therapy. A friend brought his mother over from India after a stroke for several months of physical therapy for that very reason.

Working with sharp objects while on blood thinners doesn't seem too great either, but it sure beats brain surgery or a malignant tumor.

Praying the meds will do the trick, and it's a one-off.

...Because a guy I know just had an emergency blood clot removal. He was a bit on the unhealthy side, and the clot was not in his brain. He could have died, however, but he puulled thru, no more drinking for him, made diet changes, takes meds. the guy's only 35.

Tumors can grow. Clots being treated do not.

Well wishes to Bura!

Keith

Blood clots are very dangerous. When they turn up in the heart, brain, or lungs, they can be instantly fatal. Victims can seem to be relatively healthy and active, and be gone 30 seconds later.

The good news is that it can be treated with medications if caught in time. Treatment involves removing the clot by desolving it, or through surgury, and then perscribing blood thinners to help prevent the formation of further blood clots.

I believe the next few weeks may be the most dangerous.

I'm not sure what to think eithor. I'll just keep on sending up prayers! God be with you Bura!

Pala said Bura was acting very strange and seemed to be failing but would not seek medical help. Pala finally had to take Bura to Bir hospital almost by force to get him examined.

They did give Bura a good once over at Bir hospital to make sure there were no more blood clots lurking around in his body.

As long as Pala and/or I are still alive we'll see that Bura gets taken care of regardless of whether he can ever make another knife or not.

Uncle Bill I sure wish there were more people in this world like you! I think society could ues em'.

Who knows? Maybe Bura took care of me in a past life and now it's just my turn to get even with him.

Well, like all of life, not simple or easy. We will just have to pray and be ready to help if the chance arises. Therapy may help with the speech. Once the clot is gone and the pressure on the brain is reduced the damage can be assesed. Several of my family have had strokes, one thing I know, you need to get back all you can in the first year after the event thru treatment and therapy. Usually there is about a one year window for improvement, after that it gets harder to make any gains.

Bill, if there is need for Bura to come to the U.S. (assuming he can fly, not a given for a stroke victim), please post here, I am sure that there would be more support forthcoming. I know that as long as I have a job I will be able to contribute something. If I have to I will convert my special order Kobra to a donation.

There are charities that bring children to the U.S. for medical treatment, can anyone think of an organization we could turn to for an adult like Bura?

To quote Tiny Tim, God bless us, every one.
