On a recent trip to South Africa I had the pleasure of visiting Fred and his family on his Kwazulu Natal south Coast farm where he makes his knives, sword canes etc.
I really got caught up in knife fever and ended up buying 6 of his master piece EXK and LEXK knives with different handle and blade materials.

Sorry for the poor cell phone pics but I think you can see enough detail.

Dankie Marthinus!
I first met Fred many years ago at the Durban knife show and then again at the various guild shows in Joburg.
This trip was the second to his pace the first being in the earlier days when he was only making sword canes and when I lived a little closer to him than I do now!
His sons are doing a great job with the knives.
I wish I could find the courage to carry one of them but I would rather keep them pristine.

- nice knives, streak - great collection!!

Have been to SA many times and also visited the Burgers down south............wonderful experience, to say the least

Some of mine...

Hey Chui,
That's great, I have almost identical pictures of his place.
My first time there was very many years ago when he was only making sword canes.
Being there in person I was able to hand select the set that I bought all at the same time.
I cant bring myself to carry any of these knives! Maybe I can be convinced to sell one or two if there are others who would be prepared to carry them!!

On the fixed blade side I have mainly Rob Brown products. I have spent many hours in his workshop in Port Elizabeth and always used to attend the VIP day at the guild show and ask him what was for sale.

I visited a maker in Brixton many years ago and took him some elephant skin for sheaths. The name slips me right now.

I have never seen his work in person, but from what I have seen, I really like his work. Enough so, that I would love to buy some of work, one of these days. :D

Thank you for sharing your wonderful knives, streak!!
:)

T.K.C they are some of the smoothest flippers I have ever handled.
His stainless Damascus is also really very well done, you get an idea in the pictures but it looks a whole better in person!

The Dmascus looks stunning!! I KNOW pix do not do it justice. I have heard that his knives are oh, so VERY smooth!! I look forward to owning his works sometime in the near future!! I am so glad that you are enjoying them, and equally pleased that you shared them here, with all of us!! :D

- well, have been to Rob Brown's place too...........still waiting on a dagger from him too

We should hook up some Guild Show...........beers on me :very_drunk: ;) So, who else do you know........Steven Lewis / Piet Gray / Willie Paulsen..........?

Maker in Brixton, huh..........Howard Hitchmough....? (depends upon how many years)

I don't travel to guild shows. I only used to attend the Joburg ones when I lived there.
Many of the knife makers know me. I used to put a lot of folks onto Chris Reeve's one piece survival knives when he still lived in SA and was less famous than he is now!
And yes I know Steven Lewis, it's been years since I was last in touch with him and I am going to drop him a line!
I have some folders from George Baartman and Jan Potgieter. I've been to Bertie Rietveld's place learning about damascus etc. etc.

And yes, Howard Hitchmough. I have been to his place a couple of times too.

- excellent!

Steven is a good friend and I have visited many a SA makers place with him.

I didn't go 2015, but most years I'm over in SA getting my 'Africa fix' as I was born/brought up in Kenya, and SA best provides the things I like doing, rather than EA (although just been there during Feb).

If things come together I'll go to Jhb this year for the Guild Show...........will post a load of pics to make you homesick :D

Joel is this you?

Great looking knives, streak, thanks for sharing. Trevor is a real nice guy and easy to deal with. Here is a EXK II that he made me a few years ago. Originally it had stunning interior mammoth but it moved, so Trevor was nice enough to re handle it in giraffe shin bone.

Every time I see and hold a Burger sword cane, I want one. If only they were legal in California, I would have more than one.
