I've had this one for a few years now and except for the new 25th Anniversary lucite model it's my favorite 124 variation.

That being said I almost never see one on fleabay and was wondering where they rank on the scarcity meter? I figure either they are fairly rare or folks that have them are like me and just like them too much to let them go.

Very nice, Yes I wish Buck would build some with Burgandy Micarta, the 124 is my favorite Buck fixed blade and as of right now my favorite Buck knife period. Thanks for letting us all see that very nice knife.

I'm unsure if the clip point is original on those. The maroon micarta was used by Buck in 1973. DM

I'm pretty sure I have one of those 1973 Burgundy 124's, but can't check right now to make absolute sure it is Burgundy.

It has quite a story behind it too. From what I remember, an employee was customizing it on Buck's time and had it confiscated. Chuck later sold it to another employee who had it in storage up until I purchased it. The original receipt showed he picked it up for less than $20.00, but again, I don't remember the exact details. My mind keeps telling me the receipt was for $13.00. I have everything written down and stored with the knife.

So these are a single year production only? There was a chart on the BCCI site, maybe in a newsletter that listed the different features, dates, etc. for the 124 but I can't find it now. I also see these listed as "red Micarta". Is that the same as burgundy or is there actually a red version?

I dont think they ever did use red, i think it was just called burgundy real dark red, some lights it looks black

It was only burgundy or maroon micarta that was used. However, it is listed on my data sheets as red micarta which makes it confusing. Yes, in 1973 both black and maroon, fine grain micarta can be found.
Probably a short run of maroon micarta was used. Also, remember this model Does Not follow the normal Buck pattern so variations may be found. Try the Dec. 2006 newsletter for a good article on this model. DM

Skeletor,
Thanks for the brown pics! Need to pull the one I have out to see what it is.

No year mark nor lanyard hole IIRC. It's a user for me since I didn't want to use the newer LE (plus don't like it's thick handle at all).

You all see the burgundy 1 end on ebay last night very lovely example

$472 i went to 360$

Item number 261241819468

Glad to see Nele's towel is still in-service as the backdrop to your fantastic collection, Old Friend!

Dave

Hi Dave! Long time no read. Nice to meet you. I hope you are doing well. Yes, the towel lies behind me after Nele changes her color preferences. And the collecton grows, slowly but steadily. I enjoyed the time at the silver anniversary celebrations. I hope to meet you there at least in five years.
Best, Haebbie
