I had a Smith and Wesson knife lost in the yard during cleanup after Hurricane Charley in August 2004. Yesterday (Friday the 13th of all days) my son used his metal detector birthday present from the grandparents to find it in about 15 minutes. Ever wonder what your knife would look like buried in Florida for 8 years? Here it is:

I wish I had a before pic, but unfortunately I don't. I'm pretty sure it was a Smith and Wesson SWAT knife (fairly inexpensive) with the fake scrimshaw pictures that I used as while working.

Wow, that' s really fascinating!
Would love to see a photo of the blade, it seems to look alot better than the handle.

edit: saw the post above me now, never mind:D

I was just going to ask if that was an aluminum handle. We all think of metal as being so much more durable than plastic, but in this particular instance a synthetic would have held up much better.

Thats awesome. I would honestly put it on the shelf as conversation piece. Thats all its worth really.

The aluminum handle has acted as a sacreficial anode like on a ship .Unless you want to save as a curiosity I would dump the handle [remove in any way you can ] and save the steel which looks in good shape. Perhaps you could get one of our members to make a handle to get a useble knife.

Great post. Sorry about the knife, but thanks for sharing the outcome.
