So I uncovered this head a few days ago following a rain storm. I've got it in a vinegar soak now to try and reveal any makers info that possibly remains. This makes the 2nd axe head I've found on the same property, and I'm at a loss what to think about it lol.

ooh, that's gonna be rough. it's a maine pattern. probably a 2 1/4. let me know how much it weighs when you take it out

A Maine pattern ya say? Fascinating. I was unsure what pattern it was, I didn't recognize it immediately as I don't have any others like it. I don't hold out much hope that much anything appears from under the rust but in this particular instance I've nothing to lose and everything to gain from a vinegar bath so thought I'd give it a shot.

No makers mark will become visible but at least you see the temper line and you might even find it to be wrought iron, though it's not likely.

I figured it to be a long shot anything appears once the rust is gone, but literally anything such as the temper line will give me more info than I have currently & it's not as if I run the risk of ruining an expensive investment, I almost stumbled over it in the forest after all
