I found a show on netflix called filthy riches.
One of the stories is about Burl Hunting.
There isn't a lot of end product documentation, but they are pulling 1000 lb+ burls out of the woods.
Other stories include hunting worms, eels, and mushrooms.

Thanks for sharing this, Lavawood! We are tuning into this now. Our niece spent the night and just left, so it's going to be nice to watch something else besides Bratz.

I know where the is a large maple burl in the mountains here, about ten feet up, shaped like a big beach ball, and too big to fit in the bed of my ranger. Been trying to figure out how to snag that for several years now :)

I regularly take a woodworking class at the local artisan center, for my projects, I shop at a specialty wood and lumber store about 30 minutes away. It's funny how cabinet and furniture makers avoid the really curly and burly wood; the sacrifice the beauty to lessen the chance of chipping in the planer or jointer! So..... that leaves the really select stuff for others! I got a 5" thick slice of walnut burl 24" x 24" and turned it into a bench.. they sold me the piece for 50 bucks! Amazing! This place is in Madison, NC if anyone lives nearby!

Another side note, I found some old barn siding that was heart pine. I planed it and the chatoyance was phenomenal! The really tight grain, gets a little wavy in some areas and it just explodes with a little boiled linseed oil!

Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the show!!!!

I too frequent hardwood stores and found a 12 foot oak board that was right on the edge of the tree where the branches came out. This thing has some rays and they are all spiral and funky looking. $12. The guy was so concerned that someone was buying it he had to ask what it was for.

get a bigger truck Mistwalker

I regularly find basket ball size Madrone burls when walking in the local forest. There was a forest fire about 22 years ago and they seem to be being pushed out of the soil.

Hello all, If you do take a burl off a tree spray the cut tree with pruning compound or it will likely die. I am not a tree hugger but to kill a 100 yr old tree for a burl is rude. I will be keeping my eyes open for them and will cut one off if I find it. However I plan on treating the tree quickly after making the cut. I think that the compound is available at most garden stores for $6 or less and is in a spray can, easy to carry in pack. As a side note it is also the same stuff that they are selling on tv for $20 to float a boat with a screen door in the bottom of it. Why pay 20 when you can get it for 6..... Best to ya
