I regularly take a woodworking class at the local artisan center, for my projects, I shop at a specialty wood and lumber store about 30 minutes away. It's funny how cabinet and furniture makers avoid the really curly and burly wood; the sacrifice the beauty to lessen the chance of chipping in the planer or jointer! So..... that leaves the really select stuff for others! I got a 5" thick slice of walnut burl 24" x 24" and turned it into a bench.. they sold me the piece for 50 bucks! Amazing! This place is in Madison, NC if anyone lives nearby!
Another side note, I found some old barn siding that was heart pine. I planed it and the chatoyance was phenomenal! The really tight grain, gets a little wavy in some areas and it just explodes with a little boiled linseed oil!
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the show!!!!

I know where the is a large maple burl in the mountains here, about ten feet up, shaped like a big beach ball, and too big to fit in the bed of my ranger. Been trying to figure out how to snag that for several years now![]()
