Burl strength

Would stabilized maple burl be strong enough for a saya? I have a customer requesting it, I've never worked with burl material as thing as a saya would be (3 1/8 pieces glued together). Could I add a liner of maybe basswood?

I use a lot of stabilized maple burl and it's pretty brittle under 1/2" thick.

Epoxy your burl to a piece of formica. Formica sheet is pretty thin and rigid.

I'd pick one of the ideas above...it's probably not strong enough depending on the piece. But make it a veneer, or give it some backing and it will work.

It would very likely be strong enough. I sell a lot of matching stabilized burl and high curl woods for Sayas.

If stabilized and not abused, stabilized maple burl is well strong enough to act as a saya
