I baby sit my Grand daughter every night and last night she wanted to go to Deer Island and look around. Deer Island is a 4 to 5 acre high spot in the local great swamp. After about an hour of jumping from one dry spot to another we got there and started looking around. Right away I noticed a lot of the trees had burls ranging in size from basket ball to coffee table. To bad it is inside a county park but I think if the spring rains don't make it impossable to walk there we might go back and look for burls on some of the fallen trees. At my age it dosn't make sense to cut one from a live tree. :grumpy:
By the way we saw at least 20 Deer while we were there. :D

Sounds like a cool place! Is there a forest service that maintains the land at all? Maybe you can chat it up with some of those folks and get your hands on some burls that way? I find myself looking at the trees in my neighborhood and there are a fair number of burls there, even, but they're all pretty small (couple of softballs size).

I go to any place they are removing trees. new subdivisions are great. I like to get them stablized after drying out that way it dosen't pull out on the edges.

i've started noticeing a lot of burls and plan to head into the woods to harvest some soon as soon as the weather here gets nicer. theres one in a local park on an old walnut tree that is a perfect round dome on the side of the tree, about 3-1/2 or 4 feet wide and it comes about 2 feet off the tree, one day it shall be mine :D :D :D

I have not been keeping my eyes on the road! I find myself looking into the trees for burls! I got some nice spalted maple from a newly cut tree last week (even went and got permission to remove the wood).
I haven't put the chainsaw into the trunk (yet) but I always carry a butchers saw for antlers back there.

Burly,

PJG
