Jay (Stihl99) brought over 2 fresh cut pieces of cherry burls. One grew around a limb. I have sealed up the ends and have them in a warm spot. My question is should I wait a year before cutting them and does it matter which way you cut it? I plan on going with the grain.

Indian George,
Sorry I can't answer your question but maybe you can answer one I have. I have found a Beech tree with a large burl (about 2 feet in diameter). Would Beech burl make a good handle or would it be to soft? What did you use to seal the ends?

George,Yes I would suggest a long (year or more) time to dry this way if it cracks or ywists you will know where to work around the bad spots before you cut.If you go with the grain on the cuts you will loose your burl effect in the grains,I would suggest cutting a couple of test cuts to see what will make the best pattern...Hope this helps,
Bruce

Do not leave them in a warm place or they will dry too fast and will check for sure!!!

Leave them in a cool dry place with lots of air flow. Cool dry air flow is the key!!!!!!!

Good luck!!!!
