Hi Guys,
I have a 100K btu propane burner that I have tried to heat treat with. It doesnt seem to get the metal hot enough.
This is one of the round burners used for a turkey deep fryer.
Can I use this or is it only good for food?
Thanks
Mark

Build yourself a small propane forge. There tons of places for plans and instructions and you can build one for 50-75 dollars.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I hate to disagree with Michael, he knows a lot more about making knives than me but...
Almost any gas burner will "get hot enough" the problem is in the surroundings. You need to insulate the heat. Almost anything that will take the heat will do but fire bricks or kowoos is the most common.
A couple of words of caution. The burner is problally not built to take the heat you need to heat treat blades and amy insulation needs to be rated for high temps (2000 degrees or so).
An easier and cheap soluation is Wayne Goodard's "worlds smallest forge". It's just one soft brick with a hole for the work down the center (long ways) and a smaller hole on the side for a propane torch. See the "50 dollar knife shop" by Wayne.
Helpfully, Lynn

Where is the link for this "50 dollar knife shop" article? Sounds right up my alley.

Mark,
Take a look at this old string of posts. There are a lot of ideas there.
I've gone with the $20 Harbor Freight wand torch and some firebricks, and I'm practicing for my first homemade heat treating. That rascal really puts out the flame!
