burning CUSTOM questions

We have all seen buck knives advertised as
Custom and Limited and Serial Numbered
i have emailed several and asked what the knife was and had the 110 with date marks advertised as custom because of an etching of something or because of a number or the word limited on the back side
or the words limited run or limited production /run note in box..
- i have been getting flack on asking sellers to clarify what they are selling!
could some one in a position of final authority
PLEASE ISSUE A DEFENTION OF THESE TERMS ??

i can understand that the definition may have changed at some time if so what was used before X date and what does it mean after X date?
also if a blade has a date code can it still be a Buck Custom? or does it have to have custom stamped on it...
i am tired of trying to sort this out ... does any one else have these questions also ? or have i missed the answer some were along the line or is there a definitive answer?
the bold is a reflection of my fustration of trying to get answers from sellers!

True Dave, A custom could be from near any year unless it has the box that can be tracked to a catalog number or a date. Least as I under the anvil on the customs, they are 2002 or newer.

I actully have an email from a Buck person back in Dec that said they were looking at putting date stamps on the customs. Said it would help us and them. But don't think it has happened yet.

Anyone get a custom here in 2006 with a date code??

No i would NOT want a custom stamped blade with a date code on it :barf:
AT ALL !!!!
if they really really must put a date on a custom stamped blade
then put the whole date NOT a code and put in on the back side were they put the engraved numbers ...
metal stamps are not that expensive... are they?
and if so engrave the date with the numbers !!!!

codes symbols, to me, should be only for normal production

personally i like seeing "custom" stamped as a word on the older stuff..
of course if the anvil is continued to be used only for customs
that would be quite OK also..

but what of the "custom shop" knives with the horn or stag handles and a date coded blade ...
are they truly a "custom " knife with a standard production blade in a custom frame...
or a "custom made /ordered " knife?
of course all this does make for a rich collection experience and education ...:D

is this jest me with these questions  or are there others also ...
more comments please !
However I must say these issues confound / confuse me as much as Dorthy in Oz must have been...

I don't think they were talking about replacing or changing any of the current custom stampings. Just adding a date code. I agree, dont clutter up the custom stampings, put it on the reverse somewhere. I kinda like the year codes.. Just another Buck mystique.

I would just like to be able to identify the year of mkg easier. But I can see a point of differentiating between production and customs..

Most people selling on ebay are clueless.

SEA, your addiction has just begun. Dave, send him a link to your photobucket. :D

...HA HA HA HAHA...That "Custom" in another thread was aimed directly at ya my friend...Don't blame ya for the "rant" at all either. There are so many that show up on "SlugBay" that I also can't stop my head from spinning. One after another are called "Customs" and I just don't know what's what anymore. Is a Buck 110 with "Kearney & Trecker" etched on the blade a "Custom" ??...Is a Buck 532 with one walnut and one rosewood scale a "Custom" ??...Is Trax's 110/112 combo or his fantastic Titanium 110 a "Custom" ??...I think Trax's knives are much more a "Custom" than either of the other two that I've seen on "povertyBay"...

OK since you twisted my arm and asked me to succumb to my buckahollisum once again

http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/334dave/my buck knives/

the rant is because in the last few weeks i have asked quite a number of sellers what they were selling
and got all kinds of evasive and some miss-factual answers ...
and all i was asking in many cases is what is on the blade -
does it say 'custom' like you said it is ...

<<< i had more to say but saveing it tell some one else comments then i can get back on the buck box >>>

Thanks for posting that link Dave  I'll try to keep your identity a secret so my wife doesn't try to take out a contract on ya. :D

What a great collection......viewing them is truly a humbling experience :o I really love the drop points. They've always caught my eye. One of the reasons that I started collecting the older Schrade PH1's and PH2's back when.
Mike

really i got not much you should see what is at the shows!!!!!!

Atlanta will make me look like an new collector!!!!
with wife having to have biopsy i don't think i will be able to go
and would have to beg a ride anyway...
sold the wifes car to buy bucks with so she took mine ...
hay i needed to walk more anyway....

Well Dave, This should help further both our confusion:D
I looked at Bucks current catalog, there are 4 pages listed as "Limited Edition" knives. I only see the first 3 noted as Buck Custom with the Wilde Bill Cody logo. These 3 are limited to 250 pieces, the 905, 500 and the 296. The other knives are all "Limited Edition" with some degree of customization and are serialized, and the "Certificate of Authenticity" states "We hope you enjoy your Custom knife for many years to come". So, the "Limited Editions" are Customs and the "Customs" are Limited Editions, but currently, I think only Wilde Bill's creations of 250 are truly Customs, but those Chipflint knives and the Ribbon-Cutting Scimitars seem very "Custom", and all those Yellowhorse Collaborations seem very "Custom"
However I must say these issues confound / confuse me as much as Dorthy in Oz must have been...

Dave...Thanks again for the chestnut

I have checked several of my Buck customs...... date on the ones that are marked are for special occasions on the blade , no blade codes ......... either marked Custom or BUCK in itallics(?)

BCCI for Life

WELL i would guess we need to wait tell Monday to see what Chuck , CJ, Joe or Larry or some one else of authoritative knowledge has to say !!!
I and i hope others would really like a official answer from a
HPIC ... at least one that sounds official any way...
