Hello I was wondering does burnishing help harden the edge or just sharpen. Also I have noticed that some of my Kukri
have a slite flatening on the edge in the hardend area. It's a very small amount it still chops very well but needed to ask.
I have done a seach (just learn how to do it)and have not come to any reasonable<big word for me< answers

Align would be the key word.

Burr would be another
& hone / honing
& strop / stropping
& steel / steeling [as in butcher's / woodworker's]

Anything that leads to a crisp, length-wise straight
meeting of the bevels at the edge
makes for sharp.

Steeling / burnishing does perform work hardening of the edge.
How much......?............
Also, flattens dents, straightens rolls, straightens burrs, & more.

Wherever you start in the sharpening process,
steeling is a good finish.

A serrated butcher's steel -also- acts / can act as a file,
(depending on pressure exerted)
not the same as a smooth woodworker's steel
or the khukri's chakma.

A 'worn-out' butcher's steel is often cheap ($5 +/- )
at flea markets, thrift shops, & similar
because the 'teeth' have worn smooth.
Perfect for our type of steeling.

For $15-$20 woodworkers supply often has big smooth steels.

The slight flattening on the edge is no big deal,
and will disappear after a sharpening or two.
And the outside 32nd-inch or so of edge that goes away
after a couple of substantial sharpening
will get you down to a somewhat harder steel.

I only know a little about knives. Before I bought a kukri a raiderbowie was the biggest knife I owned and I know how to sharpen them but the kurki is much different. All the factory knives I had went to my brother then I gave him a Sirprita<I think that how its spelled< he then gave the factory knives to his kids and wife for her flower garden

Just about the time you start to understand what ddean is saying, someone will come along and tell you how to sharpen a scythe ( it's done by taking a hammer and peening the edge against an anvil ).

Feel a headache coming on? How many ways are ther to skin a cat? A bunch! Which way is the right way? I sure ain't the one to ask.

Not only that, but every one of them severely pisses off the cat.
