I think I have a new favorite knife. My wonderful fiancee, when she found out that I had lost my beloved harness jack, gave me this beauty for a Christmas present. It's a Northfield Big Jack with burnt stag scales. It's a good-sized knife at a little over 4" in the closed position. I like my slippies a little on the large size, so I think it's just about perfect.

This knife is downright gorgeous. The stag is nicely figured and well matched, although the back scale is a little thin on the edge. I guess that's part of the price we have to pay for wanting natural materials. Everything is fit about as perfectly as you can expect from a production slipjoint. All surfaces are nice and flush, and I can't find a single gap anywhere. Both backsprings are flush with the liners in the open and closed positions, although they do stick up a little when the knife is at half-stop. There is no wiggle at all in either blade, and the blades are as well ground as I could ask for. The knife is not that sharp (big surprise), but at least Northfield ground it to a thin edge. I expect the 1095 blades to get scarily sharp.

Enough rambling for now. Here are some quick pictures I took, sorry for the poor quality.

Thats a fine lookin Jack.. I like the swedge and long pulls.

Nice! I've got a stag northfield trapper coming in. I haven't seen one piece of stag on a GEC that didn't look gorgeous.

Great Stag, and the woman is a Keeper!! You go marry that girl!!:D

I just feel sad you are going to forget all about that HJ!!:(

Can't say as I blame you;- - - sorta:)!!

Don't you go worry yourself Charlie. I haven't forgotten about your beautiful goldenroot bone HJ. I'll get back to you about your offer one of these days.

I had a feeling you'd like this knife. Something you said a few days ago got me thinking about this jack, almost like you had read my mind.

If we could do a simple sawcut bone barlow, with a signature "BF" in the bolster, two full sized blades like an old IXL, say a clip and a spear, we'd have a heck of a knife.
It's sort of depression-era with an attitude!!
Traditionally Barlows were plentiful, but two large blades gave you bragging rights!

Except for the stag, it seems like we were on the same wavelength.

Good pix thanks!

It's a big one, too big for my tastes but like my own G.E. knives, really well executed and a user to be proud of.

Your girlfriend knows the way to her man's heart.

I have one of those, too. Super classy knife and definitely one of my favorites.

Bluto--a swedge is the bevel on the top edge of the blade.

Hey 338...

What is the swedge? New term to me.

J. Blutarsky

Swedges are the top grinds of the blade. There what give the blade along with different nai nick or pulls their personality.
The way the blades lay in together is outstanding.
