I just ordered this digital microscope that allows you to see the highly magnified edge of your knife on the computer screen. I think it will improve my sharpening and allow me to manipulate the burr more efficiently. I have seen edge pics taken with it they are excellent.
What do you guys think?

Want me to be honest or gloss it over a bit ? :D
I guess if you feel the need for it then by all means.

Here is the pic a guy I know took with the microscope-

Here is a pic of a Spyderco factory edge on a Temperance-

I've heard that the optics aren't that great at high power, but pretty darn good at 10x and 60x, and the camera chip is better hand has higher resolution than the one in the original QX3 (QX5=640x480 LED illumination replaced the incandescant lamp too so you can get brighter images).

Darn hard to beat for the price! (my scope and camera cost about 8 times more)

Those pics were taken with a QX3. I am hoping the QX5 I have coming will be even better. I took one look at those pics and said "oh yeah, gotta have one". To improve my edge I need to be able to look at the burr to see what I need to do.

I've been hankerin to get one of these for awhile now. You can remove the shroud, get a condenser etc. It's pretty impressive for the price. Lots of sites for tips and tricks too.

The factory edge looks very unpolished like it was put on with 80 grit sandpaper and shiped to bad its not that easy to make a super sharp knife:rolleyes:

Spyderco gets the best of both worlds. They have the micro serrations but they are polished so the can cut hair above the arm. Amazing.

Here is an image of an unused Spyderco Delica in zdp-189, fresh from the box. This is at 120x optical magnification + whatever digital magnification. The edge bevel looks to be about 1 milimeter wide but this is just a fraction of that along the very edge.

Looks really rough and the abrasive scratches look like deep canyons. It also appears that they strop it on something and give it a tiny micro-bevel so you can see the depth of the scratches (don't know what the angles on the main, edge and micro-bevel's are).

Looks pretty cool. You can get a good look at the edge with a lighted 15x loupe you can purchase for $24.00. Not as cool as looking at it on your computer screen though.

so if the Spyderco looks like that and it looks rough, what does a "good" knife look like? any pics of high end knives made by custom knife makers? i think it would be cool to see the difference, though it may further muddy the waters of cost vs. worth...
