I am looking to get my first decent grinder and i seen this for sale locally. A woman is selling it for her dad so all she knows is that its a burr king 2x60 with a 2 hp 3 phase motor. Im just wondering if any one could tell me what model this is cause i cant seem to find a 2 wheel burr king 2x60. Also would this be a decent grinder to get for a beginner and what do you think would be a good price. Attached is the only pictures that were posted. Trying to get all the info i can before driving an hour or so to go see it. Thanks guys

The model number should be right on the side. IIRC, they are 2 1/2X60. That one looks like the contact wheel is smaller, so maybe it has a 2" wheel on it. Either way, it is a beast of grinder. They sell for $2500-3000.
Great grinder … grab it if the price is good! Get a VFD and you are ready to grind like a pro.

The flat platen isn't overly long, but is sufficient for knife work.

Great Grinders, Good Parts availability....Down side is 3 Phase and being able to plug it in and see if the Motor Works. Otherwise this is a Pro-Grade Grinder!

How much? That model is easily converted to 2x72. The 3ph motor is perfect because you can get a VFD and run it in variable speed and reverse. The tracking wheel on that model mounts directly to the frame. Burr King makes an extension that mounts to the frame making it a 2x72. I'm pointing to the extension arm in the photo. My old Burr King is from 1989 and is marked model 960/200. The year should be marked either on the motor or the contact wheel.

Im getting it for $600. wow that does look pretty simple to make it 2x72 ill definitely look into that. ill let you know tomorrow the year and model when i get it.

I'd buy in in a heartbeat for $600. If it has a 2" contact wheel is because the user was using 2" belts, and probably making knives. The machine can use a variety of belts from 1" to 3", IIRC. The wider tracking wheel can handle all of these.

So i got it for the agreed upon $600 the guy said he was a auto mechanic and bought it new in 1979 or 1980. I dont see a year or model number anywhere. But pretty sure its a 960. The tracking wheel is 2 3/4 inches wide the platen is 2 inches wide and the contact wheel is 1 1/2 inches wide. Part no. 702. I think ill get the extension bar and a 2 inch contact wheel and make it 2x72. Thanks for the help guys

The 2-1/2" idler wheel is pretty standard. Some of the best knife makers in the world use 1" belts instead of 2". The model should be stamped ( but sometimes very lightly) in the left side of the arm. Be aware that Burr King parts aren't cheap, but no matter what you got a great deal.
