Could a really fine grit stone like a Shapton 12,000 or 30,000 be used to remove a burr since they are about the same grit as most stropping compounds?

There might be other opinions, but I would still finish with a strop since it has a surface that will somewhat conform to the side of the edge as opposed to a hard surface like a stone.

I guess it is technically possible.
But you need to remove the burr as much as possible with the last stone before Shapton.
Also, you may want to increase the sharpening angle by at least a few degrees for deburring.

I remove the burr on a 300 grit stone, (last stone)or step up 1-200 grit finer to remove the burr. I've not tried it that much finer. DM
