some months ago i asked burt to make a camp knife for me. i like most of his designs very much, but the camp knife is the most elegant in my opinion, just a few lines in perfect harmony. i asked for a mammoth ivory handle with etched damascus bolsters and a blade made from 52100. i told burt to add some embellishments as long as they don't affect the usability of the knife. burt then suggested to add filed nickel silver liners and to use w2 instead of 52100 to create a nice hamon. first i was a bit reluctant because i wanted a rather hard spine, but burt told me that he can do that by not covering the spine with clay before hardening. and when burt says that he can do something then you can be sure that he meets your expectations
well, and that is what i picked up at the post office (photos by burt):
the blade is 10 inches long, oal is about 15 inches. the tang is perfectly tapered, more on the upperside than on the underside of the handle resulting in a well balanced knife (right in front of the forefinger). therefore the knife feels light in the hand although it's rather heavy due to its dimensions. the w-pattern damascus bolsters (o1/15n20) are deeply etched and nicely contoured (!) and flow seamlessly into the beautiful ivory slabs. the blade is evenly tapered, perfectly ground and finished, and the hardening line is simply amazing, shimmering and vivid! you'll notice that there's also a cool wave on the spine bevel, so the spine is hard!
needless to say that i am extremely happy with that knife. fit and finish are superb, flawless. i'll take it out next spring to see what is IN the steel, or how burt says: ..."as that is the only way of knowing whether you have purchased a knife or just a very nice piece of metal."
i hope you enjoy the pictures as much as i enjoy the knife!
