some months ago i asked burt to make a camp knife for me. i like most of his designs very much, but the camp knife is the most elegant in my opinion, just a few lines in perfect harmony. i asked for a mammoth ivory handle with etched damascus bolsters and a blade made from 52100. i told burt to add some embellishments as long as they don't affect the usability of the knife. burt then suggested to add filed nickel silver liners and to use w2 instead of 52100 to create a nice hamon. first i was a bit reluctant because i wanted a rather hard spine, but burt told me that he can do that by not covering the spine with clay before hardening. and when burt says that he can do something then you can be sure that he meets your expectations :)

well, and that is what i picked up at the post office (photos by burt):

the blade is 10 inches long, oal is about 15 inches. the tang is perfectly tapered, more on the upperside than on the underside of the handle resulting in a well balanced knife (right in front of the forefinger). therefore the knife feels light in the hand although it's rather heavy due to its dimensions. the w-pattern damascus bolsters (o1/15n20) are deeply etched and nicely contoured (!) and flow seamlessly into the beautiful ivory slabs. the blade is evenly tapered, perfectly ground and finished, and the hardening line is simply amazing, shimmering and vivid! you'll notice that there's also a cool wave on the spine bevel, so the spine is hard!

needless to say that i am extremely happy with that knife. fit and finish are superb, flawless. i'll take it out next spring to see what is IN the steel, or how burt says: ..."as that is the only way of knowing whether you have purchased a knife or just a very nice piece of metal."

i hope you enjoy the pictures as much as i enjoy the knife!

W2 definitely takes a hamon better than 52100. I think it is the chromium in 52100 that causes this.

The knife sure is a beauty; which is what I have come to expect from Burt Foster.

Congrats! What an incredible knife.Looks flawless.Cool that you decided to go with W2,the hamon is striking. :D

Congratulation - this is an awesome knife. I'm planning on getting something like that from him one day. I wonder if he could make that in integral form... hmmm....

Wonderful knife, hamon is exquisite...entire knife is!!! You'll have a Happy New Year with that one. Preston

He sure can - I have one on order.

Terrific knife you have there. The use of that gorgeous mammoth combined with the filed line dress things up just enough. That is one cool hamon as well. Terrific work from Burt as always.

Simply terrific! I am speechless.

That is the best camp knife that I have seen from Burt, period.

I handled this knife Tuesday, outstanding piece in every way. I was blown away with Burt's precision, the knife is flawless. Great piece from a great maker.

OMG, what a knife!! Gotta agree with you -- "elegant" is the operative term for that sleek and clean design. The fit 'n finish certainly look top-drawer all the way. And that hamon is just crazy insane -- in the very best kind of way.

Have a great time whacking and chopping with that animal. :)

Rest assured, there is a beast...waiting to be unleashed in that blade.

Burt has a wonderful interpretation of what a camp knife should be and

what it is capable of. Waiting for spring will be tough I suggest hacking up

some firewood immediately.

Happy New Year

Michael

Wow, what a great hamon! It may be a camp knife but to my eye it looks like a fighter that would make Jim Bowie proud...:D

The next set of knives that I get from Burt will be a camp knife/utility knife combo, in damascus, with stainless frames or stick tangs.

Burt is one of the finest knifemaker's that I have had the pleasure to know.

This is a beautifull knife, the virtually japanese finish to the spine/clip area is surprising, and unexpected.

Best Regards,

very nice knife. nice file work and I love the spine and the damascus bolster gives a great touch to the composition.
