Ok guys i need some knowledge and input from you fellas that i look up to for outdoors and knife info. Im trying to decide between two knives the Swamp Rat Ratmandu and one of Stompers Scout Jr.s. I love both knives and feel like im going to end up needing both, but can yall give me some thoughts on both and which you would go with or get first. Primary uses go to woods camping knife used for bushcraft, carving, backpacking, camping and any other task i can think of knife worthy. Thanks for your time and input.

The Ratmandu is a good knife but the edge is not so great for carving. It's just too thick. If you can have the edge reprofiled it would be a great knife. I personally would go with Stomper's though.

I love my Ratmandu. The SR 101 steel takes an unbeleivable edge. As to carving I reprofile my edges to a convex edge immediately. It only takes around 20 minutes or so with a wood and leather strop with varying grades of wet or dry paper glued on (other folks use mouse pads to do the same). The SR 101 (52100) steel gives exceptional toughness nearly on a par with 5160, with much better edge quality and holding on a par with or even better than 0-1, while still being easy to sharpen in the field.

A friend here on the forums raved so much about his RMD to me that when the preorder thread came up I ordered one and I'm very glad I did. It is a great knife.

I can't find the pic anymore of a fuzz stick I made with my Ratmandu but I had no problems carving wood with mine straight from the factory. The edge easily shaved hair and the edge angles seem perfect for a do-it-all woods knife:

In saying that I love Johns knives and he will make ya EXACTLY what ya want so if you want my opinion...go get em both !

Yeah i have a rmd available for me and that warranty sure is nice also so ill get it now and i think im gonna try and get a order in for august for one of johns knives as long as money picks back up. That scout jr. is just so pleasing to my eyes and looks so comfy so im gonna have to have it eventually.

Not sure if ya already have any Swamp knives but the edge retention and toughness is crazy. I've put my Chopweiler through hell and the edge never gets dull !

Actually i have a chopweiler as my backpack knife. I think it was after seeing one of your posts of a hike with you using it that made me wanna get one pit. I love my little big knife.

get the HRLM, the blade is wider than the RMD so the grind tapers down just a slight bit more making it that much better for carving.

If I were you, I'd get the custom. Can be made just how you like it

I definitely want the custom, but im gonna have to wait no matter how i look at it for it to be finished. Im going to be doing a good bit of outdoor excursions over the next couple of months and i need a knife in the 4-5" range that i can go to now so i can get accustomed to it. Since nomrally i carry my chopweiler and my rat izula. So its looking like im going to end up with both which is still a plus since i love knives.
