I designed the "Bush Baby" yesterday and made one up today. I will have 50 blanks back from the water jet later this week. Please let me know what you think.

Bush Baby: 01 tool steel, 6" x 1 3/8" x 1/8. Bead blast black G10, heat treat color and blued blade, brass tube and nickle silver pin. With kydex sheath.

:(Unfortunately, all I had for 3/8 tube was thin walled brass. I have some thick walled brass and aluminum coming in this week. Also, the blueing did not turn out as I had envisioned - looks sloppy and needs some tweaking.

ps The glass platen liner mod that I learned of here made a big difference on my "custom" $150 grinder.

Similar to the chisnos but different. I like the shape of them both. Am I seeing a chisel grind on the blade?

I just got a glass platen today. Now I have to mount it on the grinder and learn to use it.

Looks tough. Probably needs some pretty serious jimping on the flat of the spine.

...for the feedback. I was considering stippling (sp?) the area of the spine just forward of where the scales stop. Also, would like to use some different colored G10 but I am having trouble finding 3/16 stock in anything but basic black.

Looks very nice. If you want suggestions, here's mine. The blade doesn't need to be so wide. That doesn't help in performance on a blade like that with that type of grind. I'd also put a pointier tip on it. Pointy tips can be very useful. It does look very nice though and your workmanship looks great. You did well in the execution of your design.

I do want suggestions and criticism, thank you. Your point (pun intended) is well taken and has merit.

Chuck Bybee has G-10 in just about any color and thickness you can think of. He's also a great guy to deal with. Here is his site www.alphaknifesupply.com .

I was just going to steer you over to Chuck when I read that Darrin had beat me to it. Sign up for his email notification and you'll be up to your ears in G10 in no time.

I also wanted to tell you that I like the look of the thin walled thong tubing. I think it matches up nicely with the size of the knife. And I really dig that bead blast finish on the scales. Looks great and I bet it's as grippy as can be.

You can do a hot bluing treatment with a hot plate or some other small heat source and chemicals available at Lowes or Home Depot. Google "hot bluing lye" as a search term. It shouldn't affect the tempering unless you're leaving your blades at a really high rc level.

Looks good... the grind seems a bit steep but I'm certainly not an authority on the Scandi-type. Are you bluing before or after you put the handle on? You need a decent finish underneath but try this. Apply the blue solution, and scrub it down with fine steel wool, apply more blue, rub again, dabb the blade down with the wet steel wool so that there are no streaks (small blotches are okay).... let it dry, completely. Run it under water and lightly buff with fine steel wool. Place it handle down in a pot of boiling water with a 1/2cup od baking soda. You can also suspend the blade so the tip isn't touching the bottom of the pot. I think it was Sunshadow who told me about the last part. It really helps lock in the colour.
