just finished this one, o1 tool steel 6mm thick blade is 120mm, 245mm overall length, dymondwood scales, cold blue finish

Watch out for a Busse lawsuit, as they can be pretty hard on small makers, but nice job.

it wasnt copied from any other knife, just an evolution from other bush knifes i made and the shape of my hand...

just googled "Busse" knives.... it is very similar!... the knife was designed free hand and independently from scratch using the better features from other knives i made and any similarity is completely coincidental.

the steel is o1 tool steel

i just emailed "Busse" knives with attached images of the knife to ask if they have any problems with its design?

you got me worried!

the other smaller one with zebrano wood scales i just finished, again in 6mm o1

It's not the blade design, it's the hole in the guard. That hole placement is legally protected as their property, and they have defended it. It is not original, and for the record, I think it ridiculous that they have exclusive rights to it, but they do.

The following was copied from a 2003 thread regarding the same.

YES, the lower front guard hole is a REGISTERED TRADEMARK of Busse Knife Co.

When we discuss legal matters with other manufacturers we prefer to handle these issues in a private and professional manner.

I can tell you that ALL of the manufacturers who have used the mark and who were contacted by us, have been very cooperative in removing the mark from there product line. In all cases thus far, the behavior of the gentlemen contacted has been commendable.

Some of the manufacturers that were mentioned in this thread as still using the mark, DO NOT continue to use our trademarked guard hole.

i see... thanks, it does seem rather ridiculous... there are other knifes with hole in the same place top and bottom as lanyard attachment points? i wasnt aware hole placement was patented. if i make any to sell i will make sure there is no hole there

The cold blueing is very nice. Very even and well done.

As long as they did not file in the UK you are fine. Or if you don't sell. Don't know if the UK has an easy online search for trademarks filed there.

thanks, so... a triangular hole with rounded edges would be ok?

Yep, just like how people can use Spyderco's opening hole by making it not a perfect round hole.

Basically, it's a mark that lets you say "Oh, that's a Busse" regardless of what the knife looks like. As long as yours looks different from theirs, it shouldn't be an issue.

thanks, i was just mulling over the hole and thinking i could file it out tear shaped....

MJ:

I like that cold blue - did you use Oxpho Blue? I've never gotten the results as good as yours with it.
