would the becker cu7 knife make a good bush knife? useful for feildcrafting, hunting/skinning? appreciate any comments. Would you consider it a good wilderness survival type knife?

Yep - Mine served well in that role for a couple of years (until some punk stole it out of the back of my car).

Also check out the Ontario RAT7 and swamp rat camp tramp. I don't have the Swamp Rat but it gets very good reviews here.

You tired of hearing my opinions on it yet? :)

Too big, in my opinion, to be really good for any of the above... but useable in all those categories. Good hunting/skinning knives should be smaller, and - in my experience - are best left to dedicated knives small enough to comfortably work inside a carcass. You could skin with it, but smaller blades will be easier to use.

Edited: I hit submit too soon.

I own one and love the blade. However, I agree that it's a bit large for some of the jobs. It'll work, but a smaller (3-5" blade) would be easier to manuver in certain situations.

Check out the Ranger Knives RD6. It's a bit smaller, and made to be more versatile. Justin gets the very best out of 5160. The sheath it comes with is very good.

Get a Becker for a big knife, and keep a smaller knife for fine work in the sheath pocket.

Sorry if I've become the Becker posterboy on your threads, but I'm in the "honeymoon" phase with my Bk10!

I love my BK7 and highly recommend it as a bush/survival knife. As has been mentioned though, a smaller blade would be better to handle smaller cutting chores. However, the Becker can easily take care of anything/everything else, IMO. ;)

BK7 is a good knife, but as someone had already mentioned, keep a good SAK or a multi-tool in the sheath pocket.

I really like the Ontarios latest camp knives. With a handle modification the RTAK is a killer knife for the money.

well, the handle on the rtak is very tall and squarish. I's like to see it be a little smaller in the edge to pine direction. Also the handle was simple rounded over using a router so it needs just a little more rounding over in my opinion. Could be done very easily! Hell, I'd do it for you for almost nothing.
Its a thought and it would have more of a custom feel.

The only problem is the the coating around the spine and the bottom of the handle would have to be removed but that might make a nice touch to have a satin boarder.

Thanks for the explaination.I see your point. The handle is quite large but then again so is the entire knife.tom.
