RescueRiley and his friend Doug came up to CT today for a day of skills practice! They arrived at my house about 10:45 and after a brief get to know you we headed off to Marcelo's place. Marcelo has a cool little camp setting on the hill behind his home, complete with large fire ring. After some getting to know each other we went to work on the fire. All we had to work with was some snow and ice covered oak that wasn't split. With out an axe handy I decided to take the long 5 minute ride home to get my S&N 24" camp axe. When I got back Marcelo had produced a monstrous double bit that looked about twice as old as me  It did the job just fine, but there was plenty of left over oak for my S&N to eat up. With Riley fuzzing up some frozen oak with his new DP Knives scandi grind Camp Master, and with the some dry Red Cedar branches I grabbed from my yard; kindling was taken care of. We used PJCB’s for tinder and after a few minutes we had the makings of a nice fire!

We had a beautiful day here with temps about 40 F. We made some traps; a figure 4, split stick, and Riley showed us cool trip wire deadfall. Of course we played with knives. I got to handle the DP Forester with a Scandi grind. I was impressed with its cutting ability and handle ergo’s. A couple of hours into it Big Mike gave me a call and he graced us with his presence also. So this little get together turned into quite the little gathering! Thank god Big Mike came by; he was the only one with a camera!

The MVP of the day had to be Marcelo’s Wife! Not only was she totally cool with a bunch knife wielding freaks coming through her home with little notice, but she even took my daughter to ballet class, picked her up, and brought us lunch. We ate inside their lovely home and afterwards she went to work. Talk about Superwoman! Did I mention she makes a kickass homemade Irish crème!! Marcelo is a lucky bastid!!

After lunch we went back up to the hill. Riley and Doug showed us another trap, we shot my Gamo Whisper for a little bit, and then we broke out the bow and drill kits!

Man what a great time I had! I want to thank Riley and Doug for coming up after working all night, Marcelo and his wife for being fantastic hosts, Big Mike for being…um Big Mike, but most of all Blade forums and who ever is responsible for creating the WSS! With out this place I wouldn’t know anything, or never had the opportunity to meet any of the great people I have had the privilege to meet!

Sorry to bore you, just figured I’d share my day:o Hopefully Big Mike will come by with some pics!!!

Man..Tony, you guys are racking up the dirt time!

I have to say it was an awesome time.... Tony and Marcelo, are really fantastic guys, I feel really fortunate that I've made their acquaintance..Marcelo's wife is an awesome lady, no doubt about it. It was great to see Big Mike again, and an excellent time was had by all. I had a chance to play with allot of the blades that I've drooled over on the forums for some time... My mvp of the day was my DP scandi campmaster, I split some frozen oak with it, and made some traps and a few nice curly fuzzies.. snd it still shaves so that's a winner to me..The day was a complete success in my mind.. Great guys with great familes playing with great knives in the great outdoors..It just doesn't get better than that. I'm greatly looking forward to future adventures.. Thanks guys! P.S. that Gamo whisper is schweet.

Gene and Simon I wish you guys could of been there. It was kind of a last minute thing that just happend.

Riley is really good people, and really into the whole bushcraft thing!

It would be awesome if we can get everyone together again for a weekend. Maybe this spring....

That sounds like great fun. I hope some day to meet up with some of you guys in person myself; I really don't know anyone who significantly shares my interest in these sorts of things.

Job site conflicts with the excavation contractor forced me to send the crew home early.

Knowing it was Tony’s day off I figured I go grab the Koyote passaround knife.

He tells me to come by Marcelo’s; they’re hanging out back,

…once there I find a friggin’ full blow Wilderness Skills Gathering in progress.

Knives and saws and axes where in being wielded, thank God we had two EMT’s and a nurse on site to handle the wounded.

Here are a few photos of the Dead fall trap and the guys doing their thing.

While the rest of the crew hunkered down in Marcelo’s house for lunch, I gathered some dead wood from out of the frozen woods a cranked that camp fire up a notch.

I spent a little quality time working with my Fowler Stone Mountain and Tony’s sweet axe, when the guys returned I had a chance to play with the Koyote Passaround knife (very nice).

Koster, DP, NWR, Bark River and even Brian Andrews knifes got passed around.

I went home with the Koyote knife (with its totally awesome sheath) and Marcelo’s double bit axe (which needs a good sharpening that I promised to provide).

All and all a fine day in the frozen woods.

Good pics Mike, got any more?

By the way thanks for taking care of the fire. If our schedules permit, I will get you those other knives on Thursday.

Foilist, anytime you want to meet up shoot me an email. Mike, Marcelo, and I have changing schedules but I am sure we can work something out.

How'd you guys like the brian andrews knife?

I was very impressed with the knife Brian made for Marcelo, not only did it look great, its fit and finish where top notch.

Brian is doing a fine job making knives.

Looks like a lot of fun! It's pretty cool that you guys always have something going on over there, and take the time to share it:thumbup: Any pics of the axes? I'm a sucker for a double-bit axe, they just seem to be easier to handle, better balanced in the swing for me. I'm always looking out for a small one like a friend had growing up- about a 3 LB head, 24 inch handle. I watched my buddy hunt grasshoppers with that thing:eek: I still haven't found one that size, but I will eventually!

What's all that white stuff on the ground though:p We had some here for about a week, then it all went away, though it's not a lot warmer:grumpy::D

Looks like a heck of a time!

How'd you guys like the brian andrews knife?

It sucks, who ever has one or has one coming should send them to me for proper and safe disposal!!!!!;)

Seriously though. To me the handle is very comfortable and the knife can CUT!!!!

Fit and finish can not be better! Brian is quite the maker:thumbup:

It was a blast having you's guys come up and hang today. The time always seems to fly by. Thanks to the Woodsbums Mike and Doug for making the trip. Just watching all the trap making was worth a thousand pictures in a book.

Mike shared a work in progress with us that is shaping up to be a great all around blade.

Tony let us all plink around with his Gamo Whisper air rifle. I had forewarned all the squirrels though to stay away.

The Brian Andrews knife kicks behind Spooky. Thanks for your first post which pointed me toward this knife as it literally feels like an extension of my hand. I shaved slivers off frozen oak for kindling like if it were soap, and I scraped some inner (Black birch?) bark to a fine powder with the belly. I havent tried any batonning yet because the axes were hoggin all the fun. (Riley snuck some batonning though from behind a camp chair.).

I hope we have more of these little informal and formal get-togethers.

Walter, that knife I got from you has been a pemanent fixture on my belt! It is in a different sheath though. Marcelo gifted me with a leather sheath for it, as he knows I am partial to leather.:)

It, despite the lack of pics, has seen more use than any other knives I have taken with me on the last couple of trips.

Wierd ha, the most used knives never get as many pics as others.....:o

Tony, I thought I had a few more.

I know a shot more, but I suspect low battery problems kept them from being properly stored in my camera.

I know the children kept you guys close to home, but next time we should head deeper into the woods.

Landar, I almost forgot about the knife of yours that Tony uses, that thing is his constant companion, and he swears by it for use with his Ferro/Mag rod.

It is a very nice tool.

Thanks, Tony! I actually read through that thread a couple of times, but I guess I scrolled down before the first few pics came up:foot:

I'm glad to hear you're getting some use out of that knife! Glad you got a real sheath for it, also:thumbup: I know, I should be crossed off of every kydex salesman's mailing list:o, but I'll get 'er figured out some day.

Big Mike, thanks for the good words!
